PSU Bank Stocks Beat Private Peers in October Rally

Public sector bank stocks are outperforming private lenders in October, with the Nifty PSU Bank index rising 3%. While lenders like PNB and Federal Bank have seen strong gains, some private sector banks face significant selling pressure. Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming quarterly results, particularly from State Bank of India, to see if this trend holds.

The banking sector in India is witnessing a clear shift in momentum during October 2026, with public sector banks showing more resilience than their private sector counterparts. The Nifty PSU Bank index has recorded a 3% increase, significantly outpacing the Nifty Private Bank index, which has managed only a modest gain of 0.8%. This divergence highlights a change in trader sentiment regarding which segment currently offers better short-term strength.

Technical analysis suggests the PSU bank segment is currently testing a key long-term price level, known as the 200-day moving average. When a stock index trades above this level, traders often view it as a sign of underlying stability. The index is also holding up well above short-term price trend lines, indicating a positive short-term bias. For the index to continue its current trajectory, analysts suggest it needs to maintain support at the 8,100 level.

In contrast, the Nifty Private Bank index is facing challenges. Recent data indicates the index struggled after hitting a resistance level—a price point where selling pressure often stops a stock from rising further—around 27,800. Traders are now watching the performance of large institutions like State Bank of India, as its movement often sets the tone for the entire PSU banking basket.

The difference in performance among individual stocks has been sharp this month. Punjab National Bank and Federal Bank have led the pack, both recording gains of 8%. Other lenders like Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, Union Bank of India, and Bank of India have also seen positive movement, rising between 5% and 7%. However, the picture is not positive for everyone. YES Bank has experienced a significant correction, dropping 22%, while RBL Bank and Bandhan Bank saw their share prices decline by 11% each. IDFC First Bank and IndusInd Bank have also faced selling pressure, slipping by 8% and 6%, respectively.

Broader sentiment in the Bank Nifty index remains cautious. The index recently fell below the 55,000 mark. Traders often look at past price patterns to predict future moves, and a recent pattern known as an 'evening star'—which suggests potential weakness—has triggered some selling. The index is now trading below its main short-term average prices, making 54,700 a critical support level to watch. As the market moves forward, investors are waiting for the upcoming quarterly earnings reports, which will provide a clearer picture of whether these banks can maintain their margins and manage their loan quality in the current economic environment.
