PCBL Rating Upgraded to Hold by ICICI Securities; Target Set at Rs 275

ICICI Securities has upgraded PCBL to 'Hold' with a target price of Rs 275 following the company's recent Q2 FY27 results. While revenue grew 14.4% year-on-year, the brokerage notes a strategic shift where the company is sacrificing export volumes to protect profit margins.

PCBL has received an updated outlook from ICICI Securities, which raised the stock's rating to 'Hold' with a target price of Rs 275. This adjustment follows the company's Q2 FY27 earnings announcement on November 2, 2026, which revealed a nuanced performance marked by top-line growth and deliberate operational changes.

In the second quarter of the current fiscal year, PCBL reported consolidated revenue of Rs 2,474.45 crore, representing a 14.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Net profit for the quarter rose to Rs 74.2 crore, up from Rs 61.5 crore reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. However, beneath these headline figures lies a significant strategic shift.

Prioritizing Margins Over Volume

Management has opted to scale back on low-margin carbon black sales to preserve profitability. This decision resulted in a 17-18% decline in export carbon black volumes during the quarter. While this move aims to improve the quality of earnings in the long term, it has created immediate pressure on the company's operational efficiency. Analysts have noted that negative operating leverage—where fixed costs are spread over lower output—has weighed on EBITDA margins.

Reflecting these operational headwinds, ICICI Securities has downwardly revised its EBITDA estimates for both FY27 and FY28 by 10% and 3.8%, respectively. The revised outlook acknowledges that while the company is taking steps to stabilize margins, the path to volume growth remains challenging in the current economic environment.

Key Risks and Monitorables

Investors are keeping a close watch on several factors that could influence the company’s performance in the coming quarters. A primary concern is the potential for continued volatility in Carbon Black Feedstock (CBFS) prices. Disruptions in regional refineries can impact raw material costs, which directly affects the company’s ability to maintain its margin-focused strategy.

Additionally, the performance of the company’s subsidiary, Aquapharm Chemicals, remains a critical area of focus. While management has indicated expectations for a gradual recovery, the subsidiary has faced recent performance struggles that could weigh on the consolidated bottom line if they persist.

Looking ahead, the next key update for shareholders will be the trend in volume recovery, which is expected by some analysts to gain traction from the third quarter as spot market pricing stabilizes. Investors may monitor quarterly volume growth, the stability of feedstock prices, and any further updates on the operational turnaround of subsidiary assets to gauge the success of the company's current strategy.
