Nomura Reaffirms Buy Ratings on Adani Ports and JSW Infrastructure

Brokerage firm Nomura has maintained its 'Buy' rating on Adani Ports and JSW Infrastructure ahead of their second-quarter financial results. Analysts point to strong cargo growth and strategic expansion in India's logistics sector as key drivers. Investors are awaiting the upcoming results, with Adani Ports scheduling its board meeting for late October 2026.

Nomura has reaffirmed its 'Buy' ratings for both Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone and JSW Infrastructure. The brokerage expects these port operators to demonstrate resilient performance in the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, supported by rising cargo volumes and continued investments in infrastructure. As the industry approaches the earnings season, these companies remain in focus due to their aggressive expansion plans and participation in significant government logistics bids.

Adani Ports Operational Momentum

Adani Ports continues to show strong operational capacity, having handled 50 million tonnes of cargo in August 2026 alone, which is a 19% increase compared to the same month last year. Nomura has set a target price of Rs 2,080 for the stock, reflecting confidence in the company’s long-term growth trajectory. A key project to track is the company’s bid for the Rs 223 billion Hybrid Annuity Model project at the upcoming Vadhavan port. The company is set to hold a board meeting on October 28, 2026, to discuss and approve its second-quarter and half-year financial results for fiscal 2027.

JSW Infrastructure Financial Position

JSW Infrastructure, the second-largest private commercial port operator in India by capacity, has also received a 'Buy' rating with a target price of Rs 340. The company reported a solid start to the fiscal year, with revenue of Rs 1,501.63 crore and a net profit of Rs 346.63 crore in the first quarter of 2027. While the company has dealt with some operational downtime at its facility in Fujairah, analysts anticipate that momentum will pick up during the second half of the year. Like its peers, JSW Infrastructure is focused on expanding its footprint, notably by bidding for the Rs 59 billion Dadri logistics hub.

Risks and Market Factors

While the growth outlook for the logistics sector remains a key theme, investors should remain mindful of certain business risks. Both companies operate in an industry that is sensitive to macroeconomic and external factors. Potential risks include slower-than-expected growth in cargo traffic, which can be affected by broader economic cycles. Additionally, operational challenges such as cyclone-related disruptions on the east coast or geopolitical tensions impacting global trade volumes can put temporary pressure on performance.

Long-term investors may also monitor the shifting energy landscape, as the global push toward decarbonization could impact the demand for coal, a major commodity handled by these ports. Furthermore, because port development requires significant capital spending and involves long gestation periods before projects become profitable, the companies' ability to manage debt and execute these complex projects on time will remain an important factor for shareholders to watch.
