Nifty IT Index Slips 1.5% as CLSA Flags Earnings Risks

The Nifty IT index fell for the third consecutive day to 28,366.7 as brokerage CLSA warned of slowing discretionary spending. CLSA expressed caution on earnings for Infosys and Wipro, citing macroeconomic pressures. Investors are now watching for management commentary as the sector heads into its upcoming earnings season.

The Nifty IT index declined 1.5% to 28,366.7 on September 22, marking a three-day losing streak for the domestic technology sector. This downward movement reflects growing caution in the market as investors re-evaluate expectations for the upcoming earnings season. Analysts are increasingly focused on how global macroeconomic conditions are influencing corporate spending budgets for technology services.

Brokerage Views on Earnings Trajectory

Brokerage firm CLSA recently issued a note highlighting that high interest rates, persistent inflation, and geopolitical uncertainty are creating pressure on discretionary technology demand. This shift in spending behavior is a concern for IT firms that rely on global clients for long-term projects. In its latest outlook, CLSA flagged specific earnings risks for Infosys and Wipro. The brokerage maintained 'Hold' ratings for Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and HCLTech, while assigning an 'Underperform' rating to Wipro, projecting that the company may face continued earnings pressure through the 2027 fiscal year. While HCLTech was noted for exhibiting relatively resilient demand signals, the overall outlook for the broader sector remains constrained by these macro factors.

Sector Stability and Divergence

Despite the negative sentiment, the technology sector is not performing uniformly. Demand from the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) segment continues to provide stability, acting as a buffer against broader economic headwinds. This divergence suggests that companies with higher exposure to reliable verticals may be better positioned to manage current volatility. Individual company updates also played a role in market performance on September 22; Oracle Financial Services Software (OFSS) bucked the trend, rising over 1% following a clarification regarding its parent company's involvement in a large data center project in New Mexico. This highlights that specific project-related news can occasionally outweigh broader sector sentiment.

As the industry enters its quiet period before quarterly results, management commentary will be the primary focus for investors. The key monitorable for the coming months will be whether companies can protect their profit margins and maintain workforce stability despite the challenging global demand environment.
