Nifty Hits 52-Week Low: Markets Feel Heat of Macro Worries

The Nifty 50 index touched a fresh 52-week low of 22,179.90 on Thursday, falling 1.64% amid rising macro pressures. The drop comes as crude prices exceed $104 per barrel and the RBI hikes the repo rate to 5.50%. Investors are now tracking a nine-week losing streak and significant foreign fund outflows as the earnings season approaches.

Indian equity markets faced a sharp sell-off on Thursday as the Nifty 50 index dropped to 22,231.80, after marking an intraday 52-week low of 22,179.90. This decline reflects growing investor anxiety regarding a combination of domestic and global economic headwinds that have pressured valuations across most sectors.

The Drivers Behind the Sell-Off

The current market pressure is largely fueled by a "perfect storm" of macro challenges. Brent crude oil prices have climbed above $104 per barrel, increasing the import bill for India and stoking inflation concerns. Simultaneously, the Indian rupee has weakened past 97 against the US dollar. These factors, combined with rising US bond yields, have significantly reduced the appeal of emerging market equities for international investors. Consequently, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been aggressive sellers, liquidating ₹6,121 crore worth of shares in a single session, adding to the downward pressure on stock prices.

RBI Policy and Interest Rate Impact

A major factor weighing on sentiment is the Reserve Bank of India's recent decision to hike the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%. Along with the rate increase, the central bank shifted its policy stance to 'calibrated tightening,' signaling a more cautious approach to managing inflation. This shift removes the liquidity comfort that many market participants had relied on earlier in the year. Higher borrowing costs generally lead to increased interest expenses for companies, which can put pressure on profit margins across interest-sensitive sectors like banking, realty, and auto.

Technical and Sectoral Trends

The Nifty 50 is currently navigating a difficult technical phase, marking a nine-week losing streak. The index is trading well below its key moving averages, and technical indicators suggest the market is in an oversold zone. While this sometimes invites temporary buying, the current breadth remains weak, with decliners significantly outnumbering advancers. Metals, realty, and oil and gas stocks have been hit the hardest, while defensive sectors like IT have seen limited support.

What Investors Should Monitor Next

Moving forward, market participants will be closely watching the upcoming earnings season for signs of how businesses are managing rising raw material costs and interest rates. Investors should also pay attention to key technical support levels, with market analysts identifying potential support near 21,950 and 21,770. Additionally, the trajectory of crude oil prices and any further signals from global central banks regarding interest rates will be critical in determining whether the current downtrend stabilizes or persists in the coming weeks.
