Nifty Drops 0.44% to 22,622; Religare Sees Potential in BHEL, HAL

Indian markets retreated on Wednesday as profit-taking and high global energy costs pressured the Nifty 50, which closed at 22,622.70. While IT stocks showed resilience, broader sentiment remained cautious amid foreign investor outflows. Brokerage firm Religare highlighted growth potential in BHEL and HAL, while expressing caution on InterGlobe Aviation futures due to persistent selling pressure and technical resistance.

The Indian equity market faced a hurdle on Wednesday, with the Nifty 50 index retreating 0.44% to close at 22,622.70. The index struggled to hold onto earlier gains as investors moved to book profits, reflecting a cautious mood in the broader market despite a resilient performance from the Information Technology sector. This lack of broad-based momentum suggests that investors are currently in a consolidation phase, carefully assessing the market's direction.

Global macroeconomic factors continue to influence domestic sentiment. Brent crude prices are currently hovering between $106 and $107 per barrel. Elevated oil prices remain a concern as they can increase the country's import costs and pressure the rupee, which often makes institutional investors more selective with their allocations. While the Reserve Bank of India has taken measures to support the currency, external energy costs remain a factor that the market is watching closely.

Religare Broking has shared perspectives on specific stocks based on their current price patterns. They highlighted Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as a stock of interest, suggesting it shows strength following a period of steady trading. Similarly, the firm noted potential in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which appeared to find a base near its long-term average price. These companies often rely on government order flows in the power and defence sectors, which are common areas for investors looking for long-term infrastructure-linked growth. The final performance of these stocks, however, remains tied to their ability to execute pending orders and maintain profit margins.

Conversely, the brokerage expressed a cautious outlook on InterGlobe Aviation futures. The stock has faced persistent selling pressure, struggling to clear key technical levels that analysts use to track upward momentum. Airline stocks are particularly sensitive to fluctuations in fuel costs and competitive pricing, which can impact their bottom line. Investors often watch these technical indicators as signs of whether the current selling pressure is likely to continue.

From a technical perspective, the 22,850 level stands out as a significant hurdle for the Nifty. For the index to advance toward the 23,000 range, it would likely need to break through this resistance with consistent buying support. On the downside, market participants may watch the 22,200 to 22,400 range, which could act as a support zone if selling pressure intensifies. As the earnings season progresses, investors may continue to track company-specific financial results, management commentary on future demand, and broader economic indicators like foreign fund flows and global oil prices to gauge the market's next move.
