NSE Stock Gains Bullish Ratings From Global Brokers

Global brokerages including Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase have initiated coverage on the National Stock Exchange with optimistic price targets. The bullish outlook centers on India's growing financial savings, though shares have largely traded below their September 2026 IPO price. Investors are watching how the exchange diversifies its income beyond equity derivatives while managing regulatory requirements.

Global financial institutions have initiated coverage on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), signaling strong institutional support for the bourse shortly after its public market debut. Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase have both assigned 'overweight' ratings to the stock, with price targets of ₹2,315 and ₹2,130 respectively. Other firms, including Jefferies and 360 ONE Capital Markets, have also issued bullish views, setting targets such as ₹2,085.

The Bullish Case for Market Expansion

The optimism among these analysts is rooted in the long-term trend of 'financialization' of household savings in India. As more people move their money from traditional assets like gold or real estate into formal capital markets, the exchange is positioned as a primary infrastructure provider. Analysts highlight the exchange’s asset-light business model—meaning it does not require heavy spending on factories or inventory to grow—as a major advantage. This, combined with a near-monopoly in cash and equity derivatives trading, creates a stable revenue foundation.

Performance Since Listing

Despite the positive analyst sentiment, the stock has faced challenges since its listing on September 24, 2026. It has primarily traded below its initial public offering price, reflecting a mix of market volatility and investor caution. For new shareholders, this period highlights the difference between long-term growth expectations and short-term market reactions.

Financial Context and Key Risks

The exchange reported consolidated revenue of ₹16,601 crore and a profit after tax of ₹10,302 crore for fiscal year 2026. However, these profit figures were affected by substantial provisions related to regulatory matters, which is a critical point for investors to monitor.

While equity derivatives have historically been the main engine for earnings, this concentration also presents a risk. If trading volumes in options drop or if regulatory changes impact derivative trading, the company’s bottom line could be affected. Consequently, analysts are paying close attention to the exchange’s efforts to diversify into new areas like commodities trading, mutual fund platforms, and electronic gold receipts. The success of these newer business lines is viewed as a buffer against potential volatility in the core derivatives segment.

For investors, the key monitorables will be how the company scales these emerging business segments to reduce reliance on equity options, how it handles ongoing regulatory developments, and whether trading volumes continue to grow in line with retail participation trends.
