Motilal Oswal Sets Hindalco Price Target At ₹1,170

Motilal Oswal has reaffirmed its positive stance on Hindalco Industries, issuing a price target of ₹1,170. The brokerage cites potential debt reduction and operational recovery at the company's subsidiary, Novelis, as key drivers. Investors should be aware that the company's performance remains closely tied to volatile global metal prices and changing trade policies.

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has maintained its positive outlook on Hindalco Industries, setting a target price of ₹1,170 per share. This view is based on the expectation that the company is well-positioned to manage recent volatility in global metal markets, particularly the fluctuations seen on the London Metal Exchange. Analysts believe the recent dip in the stock price offers an opportunity, viewing the company as a strong player in domestic aluminum production and high-value product segments.

A significant part of the bullish case rests on the expected financial health of the company. Hindalco is currently working on reducing its debt levels. Projections suggest that its net debt-to-EBITDA ratio, which measures the company's ability to pay off debt relative to its core operating earnings, is expected to fall below 1.5 times by the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, compared to the current 1.95 times. Achieving this would significantly strengthen the company’s balance sheet.

The operational turnaround at Novelis, a key subsidiary focused on aluminum rolling and recycling, remains a central theme for the company's future performance. The brokerage expects that this recovery, combined with ongoing efforts to optimize costs, will help the company maintain better profit margins. Furthermore, the company’s strategy of expanding capacity while moving toward higher-value products is seen as a way to defend its market share.

However, investing in a commodity-driven business involves specific risks that investors should monitor. The company’s revenue and margins are highly sensitive to global metal price instability. Since aluminum is a global commodity, any sudden drop in prices can impact the company's profitability. Additionally, shifts in global trade policies, such as changes in import duties or new restrictions, could impact the cost of raw materials like scrap metal. Execution risk is another factor, as any delays in planned capacity expansions could affect the company’s ability to meet its financial targets.

At present, the stock is trading at roughly 5.4 times its EV/EBITDA and 1.3 times its price-to-book value, based on estimates for fiscal year 2028. Moving forward, the most important updates for investors will be the actual progress of debt reduction, quarterly profit margin trends, and the stability of global aluminum prices. Monitoring how the company manages cost pressures and utilizes its new production capacity will also be essential for understanding its long-term financial health.
