Motilal Oswal Maintains Buy on Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC After Q2

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has kept its 'Buy' rating on Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, setting a target price of Rs 1,160. The company reported a 5% year-on-year rise in operating revenue for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. Investors are monitoring the company’s strategic expansion into passive and alternative funds, even as management navigates rising employee costs and intense competition in the mutual fund sector.

Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC reported a steady performance for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, leading brokerage firm Motilal Oswal to maintain its 'Buy' rating. The brokerage has set a target price of Rs 1,160, basing its outlook on the company’s core price-to-earnings valuation of 38 times projected for fiscal year 2028. Analysts have pointed to the potential for improved fund performance and a recovery in market share as key factors that could support future earnings.

The company’s operating revenue for the quarter reached Rs 480 crore, which is a 5% increase compared to the same period last year. While the revenue grew, the operating profit or EBITDA declined by 5% to Rs 270 crore, resulting in a margin of 55.4%. The company reported a total profit after tax of Rs 220 crore. It is important for investors to note that this profit figure was supported by a surplus in other income streams, while the core profit from its main business operations stood at Rs 190 crore.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Mutual Funds

Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC is actively working to reduce its reliance on traditional mutual fund schemes by diversifying into new business avenues. The management is currently focusing on expanding its presence in alternative assets, passive funds, and operations based in GIFT City. These areas are expected to contribute more significantly to the company's revenue in the coming years. By moving into these higher-value or different-style products, the company hopes to capture a broader client base and stabilize its income streams.

Costs and Market Risks

While the expansion plans are a central part of the company's growth strategy, investors should also watch the impact of rising costs. The company faces a dual challenge of maintaining operational discipline while investing in growth. Specifically, a new employee stock ownership plan is expected to result in an annual expense of Rs 14 to 15 crore. Additionally, legacy schemes are set to continue influencing the expense base by approximately Rs 6 crore annually over the next two years. These costs can put pressure on the overall profit margin if revenue growth does not keep pace.

Furthermore, the mutual fund sector in India is highly competitive. The company’s ability to secure consistent fundraising momentum will be the most important monitorable for shareholders. Whether the company can effectively balance the costs of these new business initiatives with the competitive pressures of the market will determine its ability to protect profitability in the upcoming quarters.
