Motilal Oswal Keeps 'Neutral' on CDSL, Sets Rs 1,300 Target

Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Neutral' rating on Central Depository Services (CDSL) with a target price of Rs 1,300, following the company's strong second-quarter performance. While the brokerage raised its earnings estimates, the neutral stance highlights concerns over the stock's current high market valuation relative to its future growth potential.

Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Neutral' rating on Central Depository Services (CDSL) with a target price of Rs 1,300. This outlook follows the company's recent second-quarter financial results for the 2027 fiscal year. Although the brokerage firm raised its earnings projections for the coming two years by 15%, citing robust performance, it believes the current stock price leaves limited room for immediate upside.

CDSL delivered strong operational numbers for the September quarter. The company reported a 24% year-on-year increase in revenue, which reached approximately Rs 395 crore. Net profit also rose by 24% to Rs 173 crore. A key driver for this growth was the addition of 7.5 million new demat accounts during the quarter, indicating that retail investor participation in the Indian equity market remains high.

Operational efficiency also showed improvement. The EBITDA margin, which measures profit from core business operations, expanded to nearly 57.9% from 55.7% in the same period last year. This increase demonstrates that the company is effectively scaling its operations without a proportional increase in costs, leveraging the nature of its depository business where transaction volumes drive revenue.

Despite these positive results, the "Neutral" stance reflects caution regarding the stock's valuation. The brokerage's price target of Rs 1,300 is based on a price-to-earnings multiple of 45 times the estimated earnings for the 2028 fiscal year. When a stock trades at such a high valuation, it implies that the market has already priced in strong growth expectations. If actual performance growth slows down, or if market sentiment shifts, stocks with such high premiums can face price pressure.

Investors should also consider the business model risks. As a depository, CDSL acts as a proxy for the health of the Indian equity market. Its revenue is highly sensitive to the number of new demat accounts opened and the frequency of trading activity. If the broader market experiences a prolonged slowdown, the company's growth could moderate.

Additionally, the company operates in a regulated environment. Any regulatory changes, such as further revisions to KYC pricing or transaction fee structures, could impact profit margins. Maintaining a reliable and secure system also requires continuous technology spending, which is an ongoing operational expense. The key monitorables for investors in the coming quarters will be the pace of new demat account additions, the sustainability of trading volumes, and any further regulatory developments affecting the depository industry.
