Motilal Oswal Keeps 'Neutral' Rating on UPL, Target at Rs 580

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has maintained a neutral stance on UPL Limited with a price target of Rs 580, following the company's Q2 FY27 results. While the company saw margin expansion led by seeds and specialty chemicals, concerns over high debt levels and ongoing volume pressure in global crop protection keep the outlook cautious.

Motilal Oswal has maintained its 'Neutral' rating on UPL Limited, setting a price target of Rs 580. This decision follows the company's recent second-quarter financial results for FY27, where operational performance showed a clear mix of positive margin improvements and persistent sector-wide challenges.

UPL reported revenue of INR 11,860 crore for the quarter, a marginal decline of 1% compared to the same period last year. Despite the dip in revenue, the company managed to increase its consolidated EBITDA by 5% year-on-year to INR 2,312 crore. Margins expanded by 120 basis points to 19.5%, a result largely driven by growth in the Advanta seeds and Superform specialty chemicals platforms. These business segments helped cushion the impact of a weaker performance in the global crop protection business, which continued to face headwinds from softer pricing power and lower sales volumes.

While the operational efficiency is a positive, the brokerage has highlighted several risks that investors should consider. The company’s financial position remains under observation due to elevated net debt levels, which stand at approximately USD 3 billion. Furthermore, the business requires significant working capital, with the current cycle running at 145 days. This high working capital requirement can impact the company's cash flow, making it a critical area for shareholders to track.

The global crop protection market is also facing external pressures. Demand in key agricultural regions, including Brazil and parts of India, remains sensitive to unpredictable weather patterns and the financial health of farmers. The company’s ability to maintain pricing discipline and manage these external variables in a competitive landscape will determine its future performance.

Looking forward, the company has reaffirmed its guidance for FY27, targeting revenue growth of 7-11% and EBITDA growth between 10-14%. For investors, the next important update will be to monitor whether the company can sustain its margin expansion while simultaneously reducing its debt burden. The speed at which the core crop protection segment can recover its volume momentum will also be a key factor for the market to evaluate in upcoming quarters.
