Motilal Oswal Keeps Neutral Rating on HDB Financial Services With Rs 760 Target

Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Neutral' rating on HDB Financial Services with a price target of Rs 760. The brokerage forecasts strong profit growth through 2028, but suggests the current share price already accounts for much of this expected expansion, limiting immediate upside potential.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services has reiterated its 'Neutral' rating on HDB Financial Services, setting a target price of Rs 760. The brokerage firm notes that while the non-banking financial company is entering an expansion phase, the stock's current valuation may already reflect much of its expected growth over the medium term.

Following its public listing in July 2025, HDB Financial Services has been transitioning from a period of portfolio stabilization toward a focus on wider expansion. Motilal Oswal projects a compound annual growth rate of 16% in both total assets under management and new loan disbursements through the 2028 fiscal year. The brokerage also expects the company’s profit after tax to grow by 25% over the same period, driven by improvements in operational efficiency. Recent quarterly results for the period ending June 2026 supported this trend, with the company reporting a 38% year-on-year rise in profits.

Despite these positive growth indicators, the 'Neutral' stance reflects the brokerage's view on the stock's valuation. Analysts suggest that the share price has already priced in the company's expected growth potential of 15% to 18% for the coming years. At a price target of Rs 760, the valuation is pegged at roughly 2.3 times the projected book value per share for March 2028. This implies that investors may need to see outperformance or changing market conditions for significant further gains.

Several factors remain important for the company's future performance. The firm is actively growing its presence in rural and semi-urban markets, but this expansion is happening in an environment of intensifying competition. A key risk for investors to watch is whether this competition puts pressure on the company's yield, which refers to the interest income earned on loans, and consequently, its profit margins.

Additionally, the company faces external challenges that could impact asset quality. Geopolitical instability in West Asia and volatility related to the monsoon season are identified as risks that could affect loan repayments in certain segments. The company's ability to maintain a strong return on assets and return on equity—projected at 2.6% and 15% respectively by fiscal year 2028—will depend on how well it navigates these sector-specific pressures. Investors may continue to monitor the company’s quarterly updates regarding loan growth, asset quality metrics, and the sustainability of its net interest margins to assess whether the business can grow faster than what is currently priced in by the market.
