Motilal Oswal Issues Sell Call On India Cements At ₹350 Target

Motilal Oswal has initiated coverage on India Cements with a 'Sell' rating, setting a target price of ₹350 despite a strong 90% rise in quarterly operating profit. The brokerage remains cautious about the stock, citing risks from ongoing capacity expansions and intensifying market competition that could pressure future earnings.

Motilal Oswal has initiated coverage on India Cements with a 'Sell' rating and a target price of ₹350. This comes as the company reported a notable performance in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, where its operating profit, or EBITDA, jumped nearly 90% year-on-year to ₹1.6 billion.

The company’s performance in the June quarter was largely supported by a sharp improvement in operating efficiency. The EBITDA per tonne, a key measure of profitability for cement manufacturers, rose by roughly 61% year-on-year to ₹604, comfortably beating analyst expectations of ₹424. Additionally, the company's operating profit margin expanded by 7.3 percentage points to approximately 15%, significantly higher than the projected 11%. These operational improvements helped India Cements report an adjusted net profit of ₹455 million, a sharp turnaround from the loss of ₹75 million recorded in the same period last year.

Capacity Expansion and Market Competition Risks

Despite these positive quarterly results, the brokerage maintains a cautious stance on the stock. The primary concern lies in the company’s ongoing capital spending on capacity expansions. While expansion is typically aimed at long-term growth, the brokerage highlighted that it could intensify market competition, potentially limiting the company's ability to maintain its recent margin gains. Increased supply in the market often puts pressure on cement prices, which can negatively impact profitability.

Furthermore, the valuation of the stock is a point of contention for the brokerage. Motilal Oswal has valued the company at 14 times its estimated enterprise value to EBITDA for the 2028 fiscal year. The 'Sell' recommendation suggests that the current market price may not fully account for the potential pressure on margins that could arise as new production capacity comes online.

Key Areas for Investors to Monitor

Investors should closely watch the company's progress on its expansion projects and whether it can effectively manage its debt levels while funding these initiatives. The sustainability of the improved EBITDA per tonne will be a critical monitorable in the coming quarters. Any sign of weakening demand or aggressive pricing strategies by competitors in the southern Indian market, where India Cements has a significant presence, could further pressure the company's financial performance. Future quarterly reports will be essential to determine if the company can sustain its operational gains or if the market environment leads to a moderation in earnings.
