Motilal Oswal Initiates Buy on Fortis Healthcare, Target Set at ₹1,130

Motilal Oswal has issued a 'Buy' rating for Fortis Healthcare with a price target of ₹1,130, driven by steady operational performance. While the company is currently under a court-mandated forensic audit regarding past promoter transactions, analysts believe its strong hospital occupancy and expansion efforts support the positive outlook.

Motilal Oswal has initiated coverage on Fortis Healthcare, setting a target price of ₹1,130 per share. The brokerage maintains a positive stance on the stock, banking on the company’s ability to sustain operational efficiency despite ongoing legacy legal matters. The brokerage’s target is based on a Sum-of-the-Parts (SOTP) valuation, applying a 30x multiple to the hospital business and a 23x multiple to its diagnostics vertical based on 12-month forward projections.

Operational Growth and Occupancy Trends

The bullish outlook from the brokerage is anchored in the hospital chain’s recent operational data. Fortis Healthcare has managed to sustain occupancy levels between 68% and 69% over the last 15 months, a strong performance considering the company increased its operating bed capacity by 17% during the same period. By filling new beds effectively, the company has managed to drive volume-led growth. This has been further supported by a rise in patient realizations, which has helped offset the impact of government-mandated medicine pricing constraints in segments such as the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) and the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS).

Legal Context and Forensic Audit

The investment case comes at a time when the company faces legal scrutiny related to its past. On August 31, 2026, the Delhi High Court ordered a six-month forensic audit to be conducted by S. Ramanand Aiyar & Co. This audit focuses on the historical dissipation of shares linked to the company’s former promoters, Malvinder and Shivinder Singh, in connection with the long-standing Daiichi Sankyo arbitration case.

Analysts and the company’s management have clarified that this investigation is restricted to transactions occurring since May 2016 and involves historical promoter activities. From an investor perspective, this audit is viewed as a legacy issue and is not expected to impact the company’s current operational structure, ongoing capital expansion plans, or cash flows. However, the high-profile nature of this litigation creates potential for market volatility that shareholders should track.

Sector Outlook and Peer Comparison

Fortis Healthcare is not the only firm with positive analyst sentiment. Other brokerages, such as Prabhudas Lilladher, also maintain a 'Buy' rating on the stock with a revised target price of ₹1,050. Investors monitoring the space should note that while hospital chains are seeing demand growth, the sector remains sensitive to regulatory changes and cost pressures.

Key monitorables for investors include the progress of the forensic audit and how it may impact market sentiment, as well as the company's ability to maintain high occupancy as it scales up. Additionally, the company's ability to navigate potential pricing pressure in government schemes and manage the debt levels associated with recent capital spending will remain important metrics for assessing long-term financial health.
