Motilal Oswal has started coverage on V2 Retail with a 'Buy' rating, projecting strong revenue growth through 2029. The brokerage highlights aggressive expansion into smaller Indian cities as a key driver. While the outlook is optimistic, investors should also consider the risks associated with rapid store growth, intense market competition, and inventory management.
Motilal Oswal has initiated coverage on V2 Retail with a 'Buy' rating, setting a target price of Rs 275 per share. The brokerage firm is optimistic about the value-fashion retailer’s growth trajectory, primarily driven by its aggressive strategy to increase store presence in tier-2 and tier-3 cities across India.
Growth Projections and Performance
The brokerage anticipates that V2 Retail could see its revenue and pre-tax profit compound annually at rates of 40% and 38%, respectively, between fiscal years 2026 and 2029. This positive outlook is built on the company’s ability to capture a larger share of the value-fashion market by focusing on private-label products, which allow for better control over profit margins compared to selling established third-party brands.
This initiation follows a strong start to the current fiscal year. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, V2 Retail reported a revenue of Rs 997.2 crore, marking a 58% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The company also saw a significant jump in net profit, providing a strong financial backdrop for the brokerage's optimistic growth projections.
Analyzing Potential Scenarios
Motilal Oswal analysts have outlined two different paths for the company based on its future execution. In a best-case or 'bull' scenario, if the company sustains strong sales growth and improves its margins to 9.9% by fiscal year 2028, the stock could potentially reach Rs 440.
Conversely, the 'bear' scenario serves as a reality check. If the company faces a slowdown in demand or fails to manage its operating costs effectively, same-store sales growth could decline. In this situation, the brokerage suggests the stock could face downward pressure, potentially moving toward Rs 150.
Operational Risks and Market Challenges
Investors should also consider the inherent risks of such rapid expansion. A primary concern is site selection; because the company is opening stores quickly, choosing the wrong location can lead to low sales and poor returns at those specific outlets.
Additionally, the Indian value-fashion segment is becoming increasingly crowded with larger national retailers, which puts pressure on V2 Retail to maintain its competitive edge. Another important monitorable is the company’s private-label mix. If this share grows too high—beyond 40% of its offerings—there is a risk of inventory stagnation. If clothes do not sell as quickly as expected, it can lead to unsold stock piling up, which negatively impacts cash flow and store-level profitability.
Going forward, investors may want to watch for updates on store opening timelines, same-store sales figures, and how the management balances rapid expansion with maintaining healthy profit margins.
