Metro Brands Target Price Cut to Rs 1,150 by Emkay Global

Brokerage firm Emkay Global has lowered its price target for Metro Brands to Rs 1,150 from Rs 1,250, highlighting concerns over slower-than-expected store expansion. While the company maintains a strong balance sheet, the stock has fallen 23% year-to-date amid a challenging retail environment.

Metro Brands, the footwear retailer, saw a revision in its price target from brokerage Emkay Global, which now sets it at Rs 1,150 compared to the earlier Rs 1,250. This update follows a period where the company’s revenue growth slowed by 250 to 350 basis points. The brokerage continues to keep a positive rating on the company but has adopted a more cautious outlook on the near-term speed of business expansion.

A key focus area for investors is the pace of new store openings. Metro Brands added only 21 net new stores in the first half of the year, which is significantly behind its typical triple-digit annual expansion pace. While this slower growth has led to lower capital spending—which in turn has helped support profit margins—the market is weighing whether this reduced pace will impact long-term revenue growth. The company’s second-quarter operating performance was slightly better than estimates, aided by these improved gross margins.

The brokerage also noted a cautious view on the integration of newer partnerships, including brands like Foot Locker, FILA, and Walkway. These brands are expected to be key drivers of future growth, but analysts are waiting for more clear signs of a ramp-up in their store presence. The company remains optimistic about a recovery in the second half of the fiscal year, with hopes to return to its previous mid-teens revenue growth trajectory.

The stock has had a difficult run this calendar year, declining 23% year-to-date. This performance reflects a broader retail sector slowdown and a shift in festive demand patterns that impacted the company in the recent quarter. Despite these pressures, Metro Brands maintains a strong balance sheet with cash reserves totaling approximately 40% of its capital by the end of the 2026 fiscal year. This cash position provides the company with financial flexibility to navigate the current demand environment and fund future expansion plans.

Going forward, the key factor for investors to track will be the company’s execution of its expansion strategy. The market will likely watch the actual number of new stores opened in the coming quarters to see if the company can return to its intended growth path. Additionally, performance updates from the newer brand partnerships and any signs of stabilization in consumer demand will be important indicators for future share price performance.
