Max Healthcare Upgraded to Buy by Choice Equities; Target INR 1,160

Choice Institutional Equities has upgraded Max Healthcare to a 'Buy' with a price target of INR 1,160. This reflects confidence in the company's multi-year expansion plans, despite recent pressure on net profit. Investors may monitor how the company manages operating costs and fills new bed capacity in the coming quarters.

Choice Institutional Equities has upgraded its rating for Max Healthcare Institute to 'Buy,' setting a target price of INR 1,160. The move comes as the company continues to aggressively expand its hospital network across cities including Gurgaon, Lucknow, and Pune, with plans extending toward 2030.

The stock closed at INR 895.50 on November 3, 2026. The brokerage’s optimistic view is rooted in the company's strategy of adding more beds to its network, which it expects will improve revenue in the long run. By increasing the number of beds, the company aims to serve more patients and improve its operating efficiency as these facilities reach full capacity.

However, the company’s recent financial results highlight the short-term impact of this rapid growth strategy. In the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, Max Healthcare reported a consolidated net profit of INR 415 crore, which was lower than the INR 490 crore recorded in the same period a year ago. While the total network revenue showed a 20% year-on-year increase to INR 3,219 crore, the rise in operating expenses and tax costs associated with running new or expanding facilities put pressure on the bottom line.

For investors, the central tension lies between long-term growth and short-term costs. Building and opening new hospitals requires significant spending, which can reduce the cash available in the business for a period. This also leads to temporary profit margin pressure, as new facilities often take time to become profitable. The company's future success depends heavily on how quickly it can fill these new beds and maintain high occupancy rates without hurting its profitability.

Going forward, the key factor for investors to track will be the execution of these expansion projects. Specifically, monitoring the occupancy rates and the Average Revenue Per Occupied Bed, or ARPOB, will be essential. If the company can successfully ramp up its new facilities while controlling operating expenses, it may support the growth story projected by the brokerage. Conversely, any delays in project timelines or a slow uptake in patient demand at new locations could impact the company’s financial performance and margins in the near term.
