Emkay Global has initiated coverage on Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, setting a price target of Rs 450. The brokerage’s outlook is driven by the lender's efforts to upgrade its technology and internal processes, which are beginning to show results in terms of operational productivity.
Operational Improvements and Digital Shift
Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services has been working on a long-term transformation strategy known as Project Udaan. According to the brokerage, this initiative, combined with the integration of the Samur.AI technology platform, is helping the company scale its business more efficiently. One of the clearest signs of this change is a significant reduction in the time taken to process loans. The company has reported that its end-to-end turnaround time for loan applications has dropped from a range of 8 to 10 days to an average of just 1 to 2 days. This speed is critical in the rural and semi-urban markets where the company operates, as quick service can be a key competitive advantage.
Additionally, the company has centralized its processing operations in cities like Airoli and Hyderabad. By shifting to a centralized model and using automated tools, the firm has managed to double its contract volumes without needing to increase its total staff count. This type of efficiency, often called operational leverage, can help maintain or improve profit margins as the business grows.
Tractor Financing and Market Position
In the tractor financing segment, which remains a core part of its business, the company has reported capturing 32% of new-to-credit customers. This is notably higher than the industry average of roughly 20%, suggesting that the company’s specialized focus on rural financing continues to resonate with customers. The integration of the MTezz platform for onboarding has also helped field officers improve their productivity, as it simplifies the lead management process.
Risks and Monitorables for Investors
While the operational improvements are a positive sign, investors should be aware of the inherent risks in the NBFC sector. Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services relies heavily on the rural economy. Any cyclical slowdown in rural demand, changes in monsoon patterns, or fluctuations in agricultural income can directly impact repayment capacity.
Asset quality, measured by the Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA), remains the most important metric for any NBFC. While the company has kept repossession rates in a tight range of 2% to 3%, maintaining this level of credit quality as it scales its loan book will be challenging. Competitive pressure from banks, which often have access to cheaper funds, remains an ongoing concern for all non-banking lenders. Investors may want to track the company's future quarterly results to see if the reduction in operational costs continues without sacrificing the quality of the loan portfolio.
