Macquarie Equity Research projects a 19% annual revenue growth for the Multi Commodity Exchange of India through FY30, driven by rising retail participation. While MCX holds a dominant 98% market share, investors are tracking the impact of potential regulatory changes and increasing competition from the National Stock Exchange.
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) is projected to see its annual revenue grow by 19% through FY30, according to recent research from Macquarie Equity Research. The forecast suggests that the exchange's revenue could reach approximately ₹3,992 crore by FY29, rising from ₹2,302 crore in FY26. This growth is expected to be supported by an expanding user base and the launch of new trading products.
The exchange has seen a significant increase in user interest, with the total client count climbing to 2.1 million in FY26, compared to 0.9 million in FY24. Much of this growth is attributed to the popularity of commodity options, which are lower-cost products that attract a wider range of traders. By offering smaller-ticket contracts and more frequent expiry cycles, the exchange is attempting to draw in retail participants who were previously less active in the commodity markets.
MCX currently holds a dominant 98% market share in the domestic commodity segment, effectively diversifying its income beyond traditional areas like bullion, crude oil, and natural gas. However, with the company's operating profit margins reaching 71.5% in FY26, analysts suggest that future earnings growth will rely more on increasing total trade volumes and overall revenue rather than further cost-cutting measures.
Investors are keeping a close watch on the competitive environment. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has been expanding its presence in the commodities space, aiming to capture a larger piece of the market share. For MCX, maintaining its lead will require navigating this intensified rivalry. Additionally, the exchange operates in a sector heavily influenced by SEBI regulations. Any future changes to margin requirements, product structures, or trading rules could impact the exchange's volume and profitability.
The key monitorables for shareholders will be the execution of these growth plans, the actual adoption of new product offerings, and how the exchange defends its market share against competitors. Investors should also watch for any official communication regarding regulatory updates that could influence trading activity in the commodity segment.
