Lupin Revenue Grows 14% as Rising Costs Impact Q2 Margins

Lupin reported a 14% revenue increase to ₹7,786 crore in Q2 FY2027, though net profits fell 22.2% due to higher costs and intense US market competition. The company continues to face margin pressure in key product segments, though management has maintained its annual profitability outlook.

Lupin Limited posted a mixed performance for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, balancing strong revenue growth against significant profitability challenges. The company reported a 14% year-on-year increase in consolidated revenue, reaching ₹7,786 crore. Despite this top-line expansion, net profit declined by 22.2% to ₹1,155 crore, affected by an impairment loss and rising operational expenses.

Impact of US Market Competition

A primary factor weighing on Lupin’s profitability is the intensifying competition in the United States, which is a major market for the firm. Generic versions of products like Tolvaptan and Mirabegron are facing increased rivalry, which has forced a reduction in the profit margins these drugs typically provide. This structural shift in the US business has driven EBITDA margins down to 27.9%, compared to 35.6% in the same quarter last year. EBITDA, or earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization, is a key measure of a company's operational profitability.

Rise in Operating Costs

Beyond competitive pressures, Lupin’s earnings were also impacted by a sharp rise in operating costs. The company saw a 28.8% increase in personnel expenses and a 23.2% rise in manufacturing and other operational costs compared to the previous year. Additionally, sustained investment in research and development remains a priority for the company, contributing to the overall rise in expenses. While these investments are intended to drive long-term innovation, they have added immediate pressure to the company's bottom line in the current quarter.

Management Outlook and Future Triggers

Despite the immediate margin contraction, Lupin’s management has reaffirmed its operating margin guidance of 24% to 25% for the full 2027 fiscal year. The company is betting on its specialized pipeline to offset the decline in older, high-margin products. Future growth, according to management, will depend on the successful commercialization of new launches, such as Apixaban, which is targeted for fiscal 2028. Investors may monitor whether these new pipeline launches can effectively replace the revenue and profit contributions from legacy products facing generic competition. The ability of the company to control its rising operational and personnel costs while managing USFDA-related site activities will also be a key factor for the coming quarters.
