Kotak Equities Shifts View on Indian AMCs; Upgrades HDFC AMC

Kotak Institutional Equities has updated its outlook on Indian asset managers, upgrading HDFC AMC to 'Buy' and initiating coverage on SBI Funds Management. The brokerage simultaneously downgraded Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, citing valuation and competitive pressures as smaller players capture more market share in active equity funds.

On October 1, 2026, Kotak Institutional Equities released a report reassessing the Indian asset management sector. The analysis highlighted a shift in industry dynamics, where the dominance of the top 10 asset management companies (AMCs) is being challenged by smaller, mid-sized competitors. According to the brokerage, the market share of the top 10 AMCs in actively managed equity funds has declined to 71.3% in the first four months of fiscal year 2027, compared to 73% in fiscal year 2025. This indicates that investors are increasingly looking beyond the largest players, often favoring smaller funds that deliver strong short-term performance.

Market Share Dynamics and Rating Changes

The brokerage’s updated stance reflects these changing competitive conditions. Kotak initiated coverage on SBI Funds Management with a 'Buy' rating and a fair value target of Rs 600. Analysts cited the firm's deep integration with its parent banking network as a significant advantage that helps it access a wide customer base, supporting growth in systematic investment plans. HDFC Asset Management Company was upgraded to 'Buy' from 'Add' with a revised fair value target of Rs 2,800. The report expects the company to maintain an 18% growth rate in assets under management, which is projected to support core earnings in the coming years.

In contrast, the brokerage adopted a more cautious approach toward Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC, downgrading the stock to 'Reduce' with a target of Rs 1,010. The report noted that the current valuation, trading at approximately 25 times estimated fiscal year 2028 earnings, already incorporates potential operational improvements, leaving limited room for further stock appreciation.

Sector Risks and Future Monitorables

Beyond individual stock calls, the report emphasized broader pressures facing the industry. A significant concern identified by analysts is the structural shift toward passive investing, such as index funds and exchange-traded funds, which may squeeze profit margins for traditional active managers. Additionally, the industry is grappling with persistent pressure from distributors who often favor products that offer higher commissions, creating a tug-of-war for flows.

The brokerage maintained a 'Reduce' rating on both ICICI Prudential AMC and Nippon Life India Asset Management, signaling a cautious view on these firms amid the current competitive landscape. UTI Asset Management Company remains at an 'Add' rating with a target of Rs 1,020. For shareholders, the key monitorables moving forward will include the ability of these firms to maintain net inflows, the consistency of fund performance, and how effectively they manage competition from smaller, agile players. The performance of these stocks will also remain tied to the overall health of national market indices.
