Jefferies Realigns Tata Group Stock Ratings Amid Leadership Transition

Jefferies has updated its outlook on key Tata Group stocks following the announcement that Chairman N. Chandrasekaran will not seek a new term in February 2027. The brokerage has identified Indian Hotels, Tata Steel, Voltas, and Tata Consumer as top picks, while maintaining a cautious stance on TCS, Tata Motors, and Tata Power due to operational headwinds.

The Tata Group is facing a significant leadership transition, with N. Chandrasekaran announcing that he will not seek reappointment as Chairman of Tata Sons when his current term ends in February 2027. This announcement has introduced a degree of market noise regarding the conglomerate's future direction. In response, brokerage firm Jefferies has released a strategy note aiming to filter out this volatility and focus investor attention on the fundamental business strength of individual companies within the group.

Where Jefferies Sees Growth Potential

Jefferies has assigned 'Buy' ratings to four major group companies, highlighting specific growth drivers for each. For Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), the outlook remains positive due to an asset-light expansion strategy and the successful scaling of newer business lines, with analysts projecting 15% annual profit growth through fiscal year 2029.

Similarly, Tata Steel is identified as a top pick, driven by the expected recovery in domestic steel prices and improving Asian spreads, which could support margins. Tata Consumer Products is also favored, with the brokerage noting its reduced reliance on crude oil-linked inputs and a potential for margin expansion in its international operations. Voltas, as a leader in the air-conditioning market, continues to see support from its ongoing capacity expansion to meet rising consumer demand, with profit growth expected to remain healthy through 2029.

Concerns Over Operational Headwinds

Not all companies in the conglomerate share the same optimistic outlook. The brokerage has maintained an 'Underperform' rating on Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), significantly cutting its target price to ₹1,800. This caution stems from concerns regarding AI-led revenue deflation, where artificial intelligence could lower the value of traditional IT services, alongside weak deal bookings.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) also faces a cautious view, with the brokerage highlighting risks from high market competition, the need for steep discounts to move inventory, and ongoing warranty costs within its JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) segment. Tata Power remains under scrutiny as well, largely due to execution delays and operational challenges linked to its Mundra power plant. These 'Underperform' ratings reflect specific operational or industry-wide pressures that Jefferies believes could cap near-term performance.

Valuation Risks for High-Growth Stocks

For investors eyeing high-growth names like Titan and Trent, the brokerage has adopted a 'Hold' stance. While these companies have demonstrated strong market share gains and brand strength, their current valuations are the primary concern. Trading at one-year forward price-to-earnings multiples between 69 and 75 times, these stocks are among the most expensive within the Tata conglomerate. Jefferies suggests that while the long-term business potential remains solid, these rich valuations leave limited room for immediate upside, leading to the neutral rating.

For investors, the key monitorable remains the operational execution of the companies facing headwinds, specifically TCS's ability to navigate the AI shift and Tata Power's resolution of plant-level issues. While the leadership transition news creates headline volatility, the brokerage's note emphasizes that long-term returns will be driven by the specific fundamentals of each subsidiary rather than group-level sentiment.
