JK Cement Q2 Revenue Rises 24%, EBITDA Margin Stays Under Pressure

JK Cement posted a 24% revenue growth to ₹37.3 billion in Q2 FY27, supported by a 19% rise in sales volume. Profit after tax grew 8% to ₹1.7 billion, though margins tightened due to sector-wide cost challenges. The company’s performance highlights the ongoing struggle between volume growth and pricing realizations in the competitive cement market.

JK Cement reported revenue of ₹37.3 billion for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2027, reflecting a 24% increase compared to the same period last year. The company saw a 19% year-on-year growth in sales volume, reaching 6.0 million tonnes. This volume growth indicates steady demand in the markets where the company operates as it continues to expand its manufacturing footprint.

However, the company’s profitability metrics show signs of the challenges currently affecting the broader cement industry. The operating profit margin (EBITDA margin) contracted by 1.2 percentage points to approximately 14%. While the total EBITDA grew by 14% to ₹5.1 billion, the EBITDA per tonne declined by about 5% year-on-year to ₹848. This decline in per-tonne profitability suggests that the company is facing pressure from rising input costs or a limited ability to raise product prices to pass these costs on to consumers.

The Indian cement sector has been grappling with volatile energy costs, including power and fuel, alongside logistics and freight expenses. These factors often limit the ability of cement manufacturers to improve profit margins even when sales volumes are increasing. For investors, the key performance indicator remains the balance between sales volume growth and price realization. If pricing power remains weak due to intense industry competition, margins may continue to face pressure despite higher top-line revenue.

Following the results, market analysts have updated their outlook on the stock. Motilal Oswal recently maintained a positive stance on the company, noting a target price of ₹5,950 based on projections for the 2028 fiscal year. The brokerage analysts highlighted that the stock is trading at roughly 17 times its estimated FY27 EV/EBITDA and 14 times its FY28 EV/EBITDA. These valuation metrics reflect market expectations for the company's long-term growth and its consistency in delivering volume.

Moving forward, investors will be monitoring the company's ability to maintain its volume momentum while navigating potential cost headwinds. Key areas to track in upcoming quarters include changes in raw material and power costs, the company’s pricing strategy in its core markets, and the utilization levels of its newer manufacturing capacities. Any significant shift in energy costs or a change in demand patterns in the real estate and infrastructure sectors will be crucial for the company's future earnings visibility.
