JK Cement Gets Buy Rating From Motilal Oswal With Rs 5,960 Target

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has initiated coverage on JK Cement with a 'Buy' rating and a target price of Rs 5,960. The optimism follows the company's aggressive capacity expansion strategy and strong recent volume growth. Investors should note that significant capital spending may increase debt levels, while input costs remain a key area to monitor.

Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has initiated coverage on JK Cement, assigning a 'Buy' rating to the stock with a target price of Rs 5,960. The brokerage’s positive outlook is largely tied to the company's aggressive strategy to scale up its cement production capacity. The company aims to increase its grey cement capacity from the current 32.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 40 mtpa by FY28, with a long-term goal of reaching 50 mtpa by FY30.

A significant part of this growth plan is a 7.0 mtpa expansion project in North India, which is expected to become operational in the first half of FY28. Alongside its core cement business, JK Cement is also expanding its presence in the wall putty segment, having commissioned a 0.6 mtpa plant in Rajasthan during the second quarter of FY27. This brings the company's total white cement and wall putty capacity to 3.65 mtpa.

The company’s financial strategy involves heavy spending on expansion. Motilal Oswal’s report notes that the company has planned capital expenditure between Rs 35 billion and Rs 40 billion for FY27. Furthermore, an additional investment of Rs 20 billion to Rs 25 billion is projected for FY28 to fund maintenance, ongoing capacity additions, and investments in coal blocks. While this investment aims to secure market share, particularly in Central India, it also brings financial implications.

From a risk perspective, the aggressive capital allocation cycle is expected to lead to a temporary rise in the company’s debt levels, with the net debt-to-EBITDA ratio projected to reach approximately 2.6x by FY28. Investors should also be mindful of broader sector risks. Cement companies often face pressure from fluctuating fuel and energy prices, which can impact profit margins. Additionally, the cement industry is cyclical, meaning that if demand does not recover as expected, the returns on such large capital investments could take longer to materialize than anticipated.

The company reported strong performance in FY26, achieving a volume growth of approximately 15%, which was higher than the industry average of 7-8%. To maintain this momentum, JK Cement is focusing on operational cost optimization and green power integration. Moving forward, the key monitorables for shareholders will be the execution of these expansion projects within the estimated timelines, the company’s ability to pass on rising input costs to customers, and how it manages debt levels while navigating the cyclical nature of the cement market.
