Ipca Laboratories’ stock has surged 50% in the past year, fueled by a 21% jump in Q1 FY27 revenue and improved profit margins. However, with the stock now trading at 27x FY28 estimated earnings, brokerage analysts warn that much of the immediate upside may be priced in.
Ipca Laboratories has become a notable performer in the pharmaceutical sector, with its stock price rising approximately 50% over the last twelve months. This positive momentum is largely tied to a strong performance in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, where the company reported a 21% year-on-year increase in revenue, reaching ₹2,788 crore. Profits also saw a significant boost, rising by over 80% to ₹422.81 crore compared to the same period last year.
The company’s growth has been broad-based, with international markets playing a major role. Exports recorded a 34% surge, while the institutional generics business saw a sharp 107% increase. In the domestic market, the company maintained steady growth of 13%, supported by consistent demand in key segments like cardiology and diabetes management.
Operational efficiency has been a central theme for the company this quarter. Gross margins expanded by 135 basis points to reach 71%, while operating profit margins saw a more pronounced improvement, rising by 450 basis points to 22.9%. This performance has led management to raise its guidance for the remainder of the fiscal year, with revenue growth now projected at 14–16% and an operating margin target of 23%.
Despite these strong operational results, financial analysts are becoming cautious regarding the stock's immediate future. Following the Q1 earnings, firms like Nomura Research and Motilal Oswal have increased their earnings estimates for the coming two years. However, the stock’s current price, hovering near ₹1,932 to ₹1,968, reflects a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of roughly 27 times FY28 estimated earnings. Brokerages suggest that this valuation is relatively high, leaving only limited room for the stock price to climb further from current levels, with many price targets clustering between ₹2,000 and ₹2,060.
For investors, the key monitorable remains how the company balances this growth with external challenges. While the demand environment is currently favorable, risks such as logistics and freight inflation, fluctuations in raw material prices, and currency-related cost pressures in overseas markets could impact margins. Whether the company can continue to successfully pass on cost increases to customers, as it has done in the API segment, will be a critical factor to watch in upcoming quarters.
