InterGlobe Aviation Faces Cost Pressure, Brokerage Says

Brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilladher has maintained a neutral stance on InterGlobe Aviation, highlighting the struggle between rising fuel costs and passenger ticket pricing. While the airline successfully raised yields by 34%, the broker notes that steep inflationary pressures remain a challenge to margin expansion.

Prabhudas Lilladher has retained its neutral stance on InterGlobe Aviation, setting a target price of 5,177 rupees. The brokerage highlights that while the airline remains the market leader in India, significant cost pressures are currently complicating its path to higher profitability.

The core issue flagged by the firm is the sharp rise in the cost per available seat kilometer (CASK), a standard metric used to measure airline operating efficiency. Fuel costs have jumped roughly 69 percent year-on-year, pushing fuel-related expenses to 2.44 rupees for every seat kilometer flown. Beyond fuel, the airline is also dealing with a 13.7 percent increase in non-fuel costs, which the brokerage attributes to a weaker rupee and contractual cost escalations.

To combat these rising expenses, IndiGo has implemented aggressive pricing strategies, resulting in a 34.3 percent rise in yields to 6.3 rupees. However, the brokerage suggests these price hikes have not been enough to fully offset the steep inflation. This balance—between passing on costs to passengers and maintaining ticket demand—is the primary struggle for the airline in the current environment.

The outlook for the second half of the current fiscal year remains cautious. Experts anticipate subdued growth in capacity, known as ASKM (Available Seat Kilometers), due to a softer demand environment across the aviation sector. Looking at the long term, the brokerage projects capacity growth at an 11 percent compound annual rate through fiscal year 2029. However, the firm maintains that near-term stock performance will likely depend on whether the airline can maintain its pricing power after fuel and currency volatility stabilizes.

For investors, the key monitorable will be the airline's ability to hold onto these higher ticket yields without significantly hurting passenger volume. Additionally, trends in global crude oil prices and currency fluctuations remain critical, as they directly impact operating margins. The path forward for the company will hinge on its ability to navigate these macroeconomic headwinds while keeping operational costs in check.
