IEX Price Target Cut to Rs 112 by Prabhudas Lilladher

Brokerage Prabhudas Lilladher lowered its price target for Indian Energy Exchange to Rs 112 from Rs 135. The revision follows concerns over weak growth in the Renewable Energy Certificate market and delays in implementing market coupling regulations.

Prabhudas Lilladher has lowered its price target for Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) to Rs 112, down from Rs 135, while maintaining a neutral view on the stock. The brokerage cited muted growth in the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) segment and the extended timeline for the government's market coupling project as the main reasons for the downward revision.

Financial and Operational Performance

In the second quarter, IEX reported a profit after tax of Rs 132.8 crore, which was a 9% increase compared to the same period last year. Electricity trading volumes showed a positive trend, growing by 12.7% to 39.7 billion units. Despite this growth in electricity volumes, the 3% growth rate in the REC market remained a point of concern. The company maintains a strong balance sheet with approximately Rs 1,200 crore in cash and equivalents, providing it with resources for potential capital allocation activities, including management discussions regarding share buybacks.

Regulatory Outlook and Market Coupling

Market coupling remains the primary area of uncertainty for the power exchange sector. This regulatory move aims to integrate different power exchanges into a single system to ensure uniform price discovery. The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has not yet finalized the regulations, and industry estimates suggest that the actual implementation is still 18 to 24 months away. The complexity of the required software integration and settlement infrastructure means that the company's earnings are unlikely to be affected by this change in the near term. Additionally, potential changes such as reducing gate closure times in the Real-Time Market to 50 minutes could introduce further technical challenges.

Stake Dilution and Strategic Updates

IEX is also working on a strategic plan to reduce its stake in the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) from 47.3% to 25% by December 2026. This move is necessary to comply with regulatory requirements. The market is keeping a close watch on the progress of this stake reduction, as well as the potential for an initial public offering of the gas exchange unit, which could unlock value for shareholders. For investors, the key monitorables moving forward will be any recovery in REC trading volumes, updates from the CERC regarding the market coupling timeline, and the progress of the stake sale in the Indian Gas Exchange.
