IDFC First Bank Q2 Profit Hits ₹1,040 Cr; Brokerage Sets ₹100 Target

IDFC First Bank reported a profit of ₹10.4 billion in Q2 FY27, a significant increase from last year but slightly lower than the previous quarter. Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has maintained its positive outlook on the stock, setting a price target of ₹100. Investors are now tracking the bank's ability to stabilize profit margins amid rising deposit costs.

IDFC First Bank released its financial results for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, reporting a profit after tax of ₹10.4 billion. This figure marks a significant 197% jump compared to the same period last year. However, on a quarter-on-quarter basis, the profit saw a small decline of 3%. The bank's performance was largely in line with broad market expectations, driven by steady business expansion.

While the topline performance showed growth, with Net Interest Income rising 21% compared to last year to reach ₹61.8 billion, there were challenges regarding profitability margins. The bank's Net Interest Margin (NIM)—which represents the difference between the interest earned on loans and the interest paid on deposits—declined by 32 basis points sequentially, settling at 5.58%. For investors, this narrowing margin is a key metric to monitor, as it directly impacts the bank's bottom line.

Analysts have pointed to a few specific reasons for this margin pressure. A notable 16-basis-point impact came from costs associated with Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) deposits. Additionally, keeping surplus liquidity and shifts in the composition of the bank's loan book contributed to further pressure on margins. These factors indicate that while the bank is growing its loan book, managing the cost of funds remains a critical task in the current banking environment.

Following these results, Motilal Oswal Financial Services has updated its projections for the bank for the 2027 and 2028 fiscal years. The brokerage reaffirmed its positive stance on the stock, setting a target price of ₹100. This valuation is based on the bank trading at 1.5 times its projected book value for March 2028. The firm also anticipates a return on assets of approximately 1% and a return on equity of 9.2% for the full 2027 fiscal year.

The key focus for shareholders moving forward will be how the bank navigates these margin pressures. Investors may monitor the bank's commentary on its cost of deposits, loan growth strategy, and the ability to maintain asset quality. Any further changes in the interest rate environment or the bank’s loan-mix strategy will likely influence future margin performance, which remains a primary indicator of operational efficiency.
