ICICI Securities has maintained its 'HOLD' rating on BSE Ltd with a target price of Rs 3,530. While the exchange recently posted a 62.2% jump in Q1 FY27 profits, the brokerage has lowered its earnings estimates for FY27 and FY28, pointing to recent trends in trading volumes.
ICICI Securities has reiterated its 'HOLD' recommendation on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), setting a price target of Rs 3,530. The brokerage’s latest analysis suggests a balanced view of the exchange, weighing the benefits of strong operational growth against potential adjustments in future profit expectations.
BSE recently reported robust financial results for the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, with a consolidated net profit of Rs 872.66 crore, marking a 62.2% growth compared to the same period last year. Total income for the quarter also climbed by 63.4% to reach Rs 1,706.72 crore. These figures highlight the exchange's ability to benefit from increased activity in its core business areas, particularly its derivatives, cash market, and mutual fund platforms.
Despite this strong recent performance, ICICI Securities has adjusted its earnings expectations for the fiscal years 2027 and 2028. The brokerage reduced its earnings per share (EPS) estimates by approximately 14% and 9%, respectively. This change is driven by a recalibration of market-wide trading volumes. Specifically, the data for July 2026 showed lower activity compared to earlier periods, leading the brokerage to adopt a more conservative outlook on the pace of growth for the coming quarters.
For investors, the primary investment thesis remains tied to the exchange's ability to capture higher trading volumes. The derivatives segment, in particular, is viewed as a significant driver for expansion. However, the brokerage's decision to maintain a 'HOLD' rating indicates that the current stock valuation and potential growth are already reflected in the market price, with the revised earnings estimates acting as a moderating factor.
One of the most critical factors for shareholders to track remains the regulatory environment. Exchanges are highly sensitive to policy changes, and any shift in market regulations could significantly impact operational freedom and profitability. Because transaction-based income is a primary revenue source, the exchange's performance is closely linked to systemic market volatility and trading volume trends.
Investors looking ahead may want to monitor monthly volume disclosures from the exchange and any official regulatory announcements. The key monitorable will be whether trading volumes in subsequent months show a rebound from the softer figures seen in July 2026, as this will influence whether the current profit growth trajectory is sustained.
