ICICI Securities Retains 'Buy' on Motherson Sumi Wiring, Sets ₹50 Target

ICICI Securities maintains a 'Buy' rating on Motherson Sumi Wiring India (MSUMI) with a target of ₹50, following Q1FY27 results that showed strong revenue growth but margin pressure. While revenue jumped 36.6%, rising copper costs and wage hikes limited profit growth. Investors are now tracking the company’s ability to improve margins as it expands its manufacturing capacity.

ICICI Securities has maintained its 'Buy' rating on Motherson Sumi Wiring India (MSUMI), keeping a target price of ₹50 per share following the release of the company's first-quarter financial results for the 2027 fiscal year. The brokerage report notes that while the company is successfully growing its business, it is currently navigating a period of increased cost pressure.

Mixed Q1FY27 Performance

In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Motherson Sumi Wiring India reported a strong performance in terms of sales. The company's revenue increased by 36.6% year-over-year to reach ₹3,407 crore. This growth was driven by high demand from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and the successful start of new greenfield manufacturing projects. However, the profit growth did not keep pace with the revenue jump. The company reported a net profit of ₹145.32 crore, representing only a marginal 1.55% increase compared to the previous year.

The main challenge for the company during this quarter was its operating margins. The EBITDA margin, which measures operational efficiency, contracted to 7.6% from 9.8% in the same period last year. This pressure on profitability is primarily linked to two factors: higher copper prices, which is a key raw material for wiring harnesses, and a significant revision in minimum wages, which increased employee costs. Consequently, despite higher sales, the company's bottom line remained relatively flat.

Strategic Outlook and Debt Position

Looking ahead, the company is focusing on high-growth areas such as vehicle premiumization—the industry trend where vehicles come with more electronic features—and the transition toward electric and hybrid vehicles. Both trends are expected to increase the amount of wiring content required per vehicle, which supports the long-term revenue outlook. Additionally, the company benefits from a healthy financial position, as it remains debt-free, which provides a buffer as it scales up its operations.

The brokerage highlights that for the company to improve its profit margins, it must effectively manage these inflationary cost increases. The successful and timely ramp-up of its new manufacturing plants, along with efforts to improve operational efficiency and localization, will be essential.

Investor Monitorables

Following the recent results, the company's stock has faced downward pressure in the market. Moving forward, investors may monitor several factors: the company's ability to pass on raw material costs to customers, the progress of new greenfield project utilization, and any stabilization in copper prices. The brokerage's positive stance is largely built on the expectation that these new capacity additions will lead to substantial revenue growth in the coming quarters, provided that demand from automobile manufacturers remains steady.
