ICICI Securities Retains Buy on IndiGo With ₹6,020 Target

ICICI Securities has kept a 'Buy' rating on InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) with a ₹6,020 target price. The stock traded 3.12% lower at ₹5,070.50 following a 5.46% hike in aviation fuel prices. While short-term costs remain high, analysts are banking on long-term industry growth.

Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, the operator of IndiGo, faced selling pressure on Tuesday, falling approximately 3.12% to ₹5,070.50. This market reaction comes as the aviation sector faces a fresh cost challenge with Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices rising by 5.46% to ₹121.28 per litre as of September 1, 2026. This marks the second consecutive month that higher fuel costs have weighed on airline operators, directly impacting operating margins.

Despite these short-term pressures, ICICI Securities has reaffirmed its 'Buy' rating on the stock, setting a target price of ₹6,020. The brokerage firm acknowledges that while earnings projections for FY27 have been lowered to reflect higher energy costs, the long-term outlook for the airline remains supported by structural changes in the Indian aviation market.

Industry Consolidation and Yields

Analysts at ICICI Securities highlight that the Indian airline industry is seeing significant consolidation, which has created a better pricing environment for the largest players. IndiGo has actively used this position to its advantage, reporting a yield increase of over 20% in the first quarter of the year. Management has indicated that further yield improvements are expected in the second quarter. These increases are seen as a critical way to help the company offset rising fuel and operational costs.

However, the company’s recent financial results underscore the challenges of the current operating environment. IndiGo reported a net loss of ₹2,537 crore for the fourth quarter of FY26. This loss was largely driven by volatility in currency markets—specifically the depreciation of the rupee—and high operating expenses. For shareholders, the key financial monitorable remains the company’s ability to manage its cost per available seat kilometer amid these external energy and currency pressures.

Strategic Expansion and Risks

The brokerage’s positive stance is also tied to IndiGo’s 2030 strategic roadmap. The airline is targeting a massive capacity expansion, aiming for an annual capacity of 300 billion available seat kilometers. The plan includes a goal to transport 200 million passengers and manage over 3,000 daily departures by the end of the decade. Analysts believe this aggressive growth plan offers strong earnings visibility for the medium to long term.

Investors should, however, remain aware of the risks involved. The airline industry is highly sensitive to geopolitical instability, which can disrupt flight operations and lead to increased costs. Furthermore, currency fluctuations continue to pose a risk to the bottom line, as many aviation costs, such as aircraft leasing and maintenance, are often linked to foreign currencies. While the company maintains a dominant position, its profitability will remain closely tied to its ability to pass on fuel price hikes to passengers and maintain demand during periods of high ticket pricing.
