ICICI Securities has kept a 'Hold' rating on The Ramco Cements Ltd with a target price of Rs 942. While the company saw a 12% rise in sales volume for Q1 FY27, profits dropped 63% due to rising costs. The brokerage remains cautious, citing concerns over fuel price volatility, seasonal demand slowdowns, and intense industry competition.
ICICI Securities has maintained its 'Hold' recommendation on The Ramco Cements Ltd (TRCL), setting a target price of Rs 942. The decision follows the company's first-quarter results for the 2026-27 financial year, which revealed a challenging situation where strong sales volume was offset by rising costs and shrinking profit margins.
In the first quarter ending June 2026, The Ramco Cements reported a revenue of Rs 2,276 crore, marking a 10% increase compared to the previous year. The company also successfully moved 4.48 million tonnes of cement, a 12% volume growth. However, this increase in sales activity did not translate into better earnings for shareholders. The company's net profit fell sharply by 63% year-on-year to Rs 31.86 crore, while operating profit margins contracted to 13.55%.
Operational Wins vs. Cost Pressures
While the brokerage noted that The Ramco Cements performed well operationally—specifically with costs per tonne performing better than expectations—it decided against raising its earnings estimates. This is because the core issue remains the rising cost of production. The company has faced significant pressure from high fuel prices and packing material costs. Additionally, the recent introduction of a mineral-bearing land tax in Tamil Nadu has added to the company's financial burden, further impacting profitability.
Outlook and Market Risks
ICICI Securities highlighted several factors that keep the outlook cautious. First, the impact of high-cost fuel is expected to be felt more fully in the second quarter of the financial year. The ongoing volatility in global fuel prices, driven by the current crisis in West Asia, remains a key risk for cement manufacturers who rely heavily on energy-intensive production processes.
Furthermore, the cement industry typically faces seasonal weakness in the second and third quarters, which often leads to softer cement prices. This seasonal slowdown, combined with intense competition among cement companies, limits the ability of firms to pass on cost increases to customers. These conditions have led the brokerage to maintain a cautious stance on the stock, as the path to significantly higher profits appears difficult in the near term.
Investors monitoring the stock may watch for how the company manages its fuel costs in upcoming quarters and whether demand trends improve enough to offset the current competitive pressures. The ability of the management to stabilize profit margins despite these sector-wide challenges will be an important factor to track.
