ICICI Securities Keeps Buy Rating on AU Small Finance Bank at INR 1,250

ICICI Securities has maintained its bullish outlook on AU Small Finance Bank, setting a target price of INR 1,250. The brokerage highlights the lender's ongoing transition to a universal bank. However, investors remain focused on how the bank manages rising deposit costs and competitive margin pressures.

ICICI Securities has reiterated its positive outlook on AU Small Finance Bank, setting a target price of INR 1,250. The brokerage firm noted that the bank’s ongoing transformation into a universal bank is a key driver for long-term value. This shift is expected to allow the institution to operate on a broader scale and compete more effectively with larger private sector players.

Progress Toward Universal Banking

The bank’s path to becoming a universal lender has moved forward significantly. After receiving in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in August 2025, the bank cleared a major hurdle in March 2026 when the regulator relaxed the Non-Operative Financial Holding Company (NOFHC) requirement. This change simplifies the corporate structure, as the bank no longer needs to maintain this holding company unless it establishes new group entities. With this regulatory easing, the bank has submitted its final application for the universal banking license, a move that is expected to facilitate faster deposit growth and a stronger presence in retail banking.

Financial Performance in Q1 FY27

The bank’s financial results for the quarter ended June 2026 highlight its ability to grow despite a challenging banking environment. For Q1 FY27, the lender reported a net profit of INR 796 crore, representing a 37% increase compared to the same period last year. Net Interest Income, which is the difference between interest earned and interest paid, stood at INR 2,696 crore, a 32% rise year-on-year. While these growth metrics are strong, the bank continues to maintain stable asset quality, with Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) at 2.10% and Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) at 0.76% as of June 2026.

Sector Challenges and Risks

While the brokerage remains optimistic, the banking sector is dealing with several pressures that investors should monitor. Rising deposit costs are outpacing portfolio yields, which has created pressure on profit margins across the small finance banking industry. Furthermore, the competition for customer deposits remains intense, as banks across the country fight to secure stable funding. The bank also faces the challenge of managing elevated operating expenses, driven by ongoing investments in its branch network and digital technology. Additionally, there is always a possibility of stress in the unsecured loan segment, which is a known risk factor consistent with broader trends in the Indian retail credit market.

The next major development for shareholders to track will be the final grant of the universal banking license and how the management handles the integration of its expanded operations. Investors may also watch for quarterly updates on deposit growth and net interest margins to see if the bank can successfully navigate the current environment of high funding costs.
