ICICI Securities Cuts UltraTech Cement Target to ₹11,000

ICICI Securities has lowered its price target for UltraTech Cement to ₹11,000 from ₹12,138. While the company reported a 13% volume growth in the second quarter of FY27, rising operational costs and stagnant profits have led to a cautious outlook. Investors may monitor how the company handles sector-wide overcapacity and intense pricing competition, which are limiting its ability to maintain profit margins.

ICICI Securities has revised its outlook on UltraTech Cement, lowering the price target for the stock to ₹11,000 from the previous ₹12,138. The decision follows the company's performance in the second quarter of the financial year 2027, where financial results highlighted a disconnect between sales growth and actual profit. While the company achieved a 13% year-over-year increase in sales volumes, its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization, or EBITDA, remained largely flat due to higher operational expenses.

Impact of Rising Costs and Pricing Pressure

The brokerage firm noted that the company is struggling to pass on rising costs to consumers, a common challenge currently faced by many players in the cement sector. This inability to raise prices effectively is largely due to intense competition among manufacturers. Furthermore, costs related to fuel and crude oil have increased, adding pressure to the company's ability to protect its profit margins. The report also highlights that, despite the company's efforts, the stagnant EBITDA performance has led to a downward revision in profit forecasts for both FY27 and FY28 by approximately 3%.

Sector Challenges and Valuation Adjustment

The broader cement sector is currently facing systemic risks that have influenced this valuation adjustment. Analysts have pointed to multiple headwinds, including cooling demand for cement, partly linked to drought conditions in various regions, and significant industry-wide overcapacity. This excess supply, created by aggressive capacity expansion across the industry, makes it difficult for companies to maintain or increase prices. As a result of these factors, ICICI Securities has decided to reduce the valuation multiple assigned to UltraTech Cement. The firm trimmed the estimated EV/EBITDA multiple for FY28 to 16x, down from the 17x used previously.

What Investors May Track Next

Moving forward, the primary focus for investors will be the company’s ability to manage its profit margins amidst these sector-wide pressures. Key monitorables include whether the company can successfully improve its pricing power in a competitive market and how demand patterns evolve in the coming quarters. The sustainability of volume growth will be important, but the market is likely to place equal weight on the company's ability to control its operating costs. The neutral outlook maintained by the brokerage suggests that structural challenges within the industry may continue to impact the company's performance until demand conditions improve and supply pressure eases.
