ICICI Lombard Profit Forecasts Raised by Motilal Oswal

Brokerage Motilal Oswal has upwardly revised ICICI Lombard’s profit estimates for FY27 and FY28 by up to 7% following strong Q2 results. Growth was driven by motor insurance and the 'Elevate' health product. Despite the positive outlook, the brokerage maintains a neutral stance, citing regulatory risks related to distribution norms and upcoming capital requirement standards.

Motilal Oswal has updated its profit outlook for ICICI Lombard General Insurance, raising estimates for the current and next financial years after the insurer posted a strong performance in the second quarter of FY27. The brokerage has assigned a price target of ₹1,730 for the stock, based on a valuation of 25 times the projected earnings for the fiscal year 2028.

The performance update follows notable success in the company's motor insurance segment and its retail health offerings, specifically the 'Elevate' product line. Analysts noted that adjustments related to GST have helped the insurer improve its performance in the motor insurance space. Furthermore, the company has managed to stabilize its claims ratio in motor third-party insurance, a critical metric that indicates how much of the premium is paid out as insurance claims. Improving this ratio directly impacts the company's profitability.

Why the Neutral Stance?

Despite these positive growth trends, Motilal Oswal has kept a neutral rating on the stock. This suggest that the brokerage believes the current stock price may already account for these growth factors. The cautious outlook is also linked to potential headwinds from upcoming regulatory changes.

The insurance sector is preparing for the introduction of Risk-Based Capital (RBC) standards. This is a new, globally accepted framework that will change how much capital insurance companies must keep in reserve based on their actual risk profile. Additionally, potential changes in distribution norms—the rules governing how insurance products are sold and the commissions paid to agents—remain a key area of uncertainty for the industry. These regulations could significantly change the cost structure and growth paths for general insurance companies.

Sector Context and Investor Focus

The general insurance industry in India is highly competitive, with companies constantly fighting for market share. ICICI Lombard’s ability to grow in the retail health segment, while managing competitive pressure in the motor insurance category, has been a core part of its business strategy.

Investors may want to watch for updates from the insurance regulator, IRDAI, regarding the final structure of the new distribution norms and the rollout timeline for the RBC framework. These regulatory updates will be critical to understand as they will influence the business environment for all general insurers in the coming years.
