Hero MotoCorp Focuses on Premium Bikes Amid Margin Pressure

Hero MotoCorp is growing in the 125cc motorcycle segment and premium bikes, according to recent brokerage analysis. While revenue has risen, investors are watching how rising commodity costs affect profit margins. The company's expansion into EVs through Ather and its core motorcycle brands remain key areas of focus.

Hero MotoCorp recently saw a 21% increase in year-on-year revenue, driven by strong sales of its core motorcycles and a strategy to shift toward more premium models. A recent brokerage report by Choice Institutional Equities noted this performance, setting a target price of ₹6,450 for the stock. The company’s success in the 125cc motorcycle category and the strong demand for its flagship Splendor brand remain the primary drivers of this growth.

Impact of Commodity Costs on Margins

Despite the rise in revenue, the company’s operating profit margin contracted to 13.4%, a decline of 164 basis points. This dip is largely attributed to the rising costs of raw materials like steel and aluminum. While the company has implemented cost-saving measures to protect its profitability, investors will be watching to see if these efforts are enough to stabilize margins if commodity prices remain volatile. The ability to manage these costs without slowing down sales growth is a key factor for the company's financial health.

Strategy and Diversification

Hero MotoCorp is actively working to move toward higher-value products to improve its profit potential. The 125cc segment, which grew by 19% in the first half of fiscal year 2027, is a critical part of this transition. Furthermore, the company is looking beyond traditional petrol bikes by building its presence in the electric vehicle space. Its investments in Ather Energy and its internal development of the Vida brand reflect a broader goal to diversify income and adapt to changing market trends.

Competitive Landscape and Risks

The Indian two-wheeler market remains highly competitive. Peers like Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor are also aggressively expanding their premium and electric vehicle portfolios. This competition can put pressure on market share and pricing power. Any delay in the rollout of new premium products or a sharp spike in raw material costs could impact the company’s ability to meet its growth targets.

Investors may track the company’s progress in balancing its premium product rollout with cost management. Future updates on the contribution of the electric vehicle segment, especially through its stake in Ather Energy, will also be important for evaluating the company’s long-term strategy beyond its core motorcycle business.
