Havells India Q1 Profit Falls 17% Amid Margin Pressure

Havells India reported a 19.5% revenue jump in Q1 FY27, but profits declined 17% due to higher advertising costs and rising commodity prices. The company's EBITDA margins contracted by 230 basis points as it faced inflationary pressures. Investors are now focused on whether the company can normalize margins in the coming quarters through price adjustments and reduced marketing expenditure.

Havells India, a major player in the consumer electrical and durable goods sector, saw mixed results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. While the company achieved strong revenue growth of 19.5% compared to the same period last year, its bottom line faced significant headwinds. The company's Profit After Tax (PAT) fell by 17% year-on-year, a result of operational pressures that weighed on its profitability.

Factors Behind the Profit Decline

The drop in profit was primarily driven by a 230 basis point contraction in EBITDA margins. This margin squeeze was caused by two main factors: increased spending on advertising and higher commodity inflation. As a company that relies heavily on brand visibility, Havells ramped up its promotional activities during the quarter. Simultaneously, the rising cost of raw materials—a persistent challenge for manufacturing-heavy businesses—made it difficult to maintain previous profitability levels.

Revenue Drivers and Operational Context

Despite the profit dip, the company's revenue growth remains a key highlight. The Cables and Wires (C&W) segment continues to be a major revenue pillar, benefiting from ongoing infrastructure demand. Additionally, the Lloyd consumer durable brand and the company’s newer Renewables business are gaining traction and contributing to the top-line expansion. The company has already implemented price increases across various product categories to offset the impact of input cost inflation.

Brokerage Perspective and Valuation

Following the results, Anand Rathi released a research note maintaining a positive outlook, setting a revised target price of Rs 1,379. This valuation calculation is based on 45 times the estimated earnings per share for the financial year 2028. It is important for investors to note that this target is a downward revision from the previous estimate of Rs 1,447, reflecting a more cautious view on the pace of immediate earnings recovery.

Looking Ahead

For investors, the most critical area to monitor in the coming months is the recovery of operating margins. The management has suggested that advertising expenditure is expected to normalize starting from the second quarter of FY27. Investors will be watching for clear evidence of this in upcoming filings to see if the company can restore its margin profile. Other important factors include the stability of raw material prices, the execution of new manufacturing capacity, and the scale-up speed of the Renewables business unit. The speed at which the Lloyd segment improves its profitability will also remain a key indicator of the company’s operational efficiency in the near term.
