HPCL Profit Dips 9% as Costs Offset Strong Margins

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation reported a standalone profit of ₹34.8 billion, a 9.1% year-on-year decline due to higher tax and interest expenses. Although refining margins improved to $32.2 per barrel, brokerages remain cautious about the impact of crude price normalization. Investors are now closely watching the Rajasthan refinery project, which is scheduled to reach full operational capacity by the third quarter of the current fiscal year.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) recently reported a mixed financial performance for the quarter, where strong operational gains were tempered by rising financial costs. The company achieved a standalone EBITDA of ₹90.7 billion, a figure that beat market expectations. Despite this operational strength, the company’s Profit After Tax (PAT) stood at ₹34.8 billion, reflecting a 9.1% year-on-year decline. This dip was primarily driven by higher tax liabilities and increased interest expenses, which impacted the bottom line.

Refining Margins and Operational Gains

A key highlight of the recent performance was the improvement in Gross Refining Margins (GRM). The company reported a pre-SAED GRM of $32.2 per barrel, showing a notable improvement from the $23.8 per barrel recorded in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. This increase in refining efficiency played a crucial role in supporting the EBITDA figure, suggesting that the core refining business remains robust despite broader cost pressures.

Future Growth and Project Milestones

The company is currently focused on the ramp-up of the Rajasthan Refinery (HRRL) project. This is a critical development for investors, as it represents a significant expansion in production capacity. The management has indicated plans for the project to reach full operational status by the end of the third quarter of fiscal year 2027. Meeting this timeline will be essential for the company to justify its capital spending and improve overall financial efficiency in the coming years.

Analyst Outlook and Sector Risks

Following these results, brokerage firms have updated their outlook on the stock, setting a price target of ₹342. This adjustment reflects a cautious view on the long-term sustainability of current refining margins. Analysts expect that global crude prices may soften as geopolitical tensions stabilize, which would naturally impact future GRMs. Consequently, projections for the next two fiscal years remain conservative, with GRM estimates hovering between $7.7 and $7.9 per barrel.

For investors, the primary monitorables remain the successful and timely commissioning of the Rajasthan Refinery project and the company’s ability to manage interest and tax costs. The movement of global crude oil prices will also be a key factor, as it directly influences refining profitability and the overall financial performance in future quarters.
