Prabhudas Lilladher has issued a positive outlook on HDFC Life Insurance with a target price of Rs 765. The research note points to a 13% rise in annual premium equivalent and margin expansion, while advising investors to watch for regulatory updates on insurance commission structures.
Brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilladher has released a research note on HDFC Life Insurance, setting a target price of Rs 765. The report highlights the company's recent operational performance and its ability to maintain growth in a competitive insurance sector.
At the core of the positive view is the company's 13% year-on-year growth in Annual Premium Equivalent (APE) for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. For investors, APE is a vital metric that calculates the total value of new policies sold by the company in a year. This growth was driven by higher demand for annuity products, which provide regular income, and non-participating plans. Another key driver was the recovery in business generated through its primary distribution partner, HDFC Bank, which saw a 12% increase in channel volumes.
Profitability metrics also appeared stable. The company reported Value of New Business (VNB) margins of 24.5%. VNB margins measure the profit generated by the new policies sold during a specific period. The brokerage expects these margins to expand further by 20 to 30 basis points over the next two fiscal years as the company shifts its product mix toward higher-value offerings.
Despite the positive indicators, the report advises investors to remain cautious regarding potential regulatory headwinds. There is ongoing discussion and uncertainty regarding potential changes to insurance commission guidelines in India. Changes in these structures can impact how insurers pay commissions to agents and banks, which could influence overall distribution costs. For this reason, the brokerage has moderated its growth expectations for APE to 13% for FY27 and 14% for FY28.
For its valuation, the firm has moved its target price calculations to FY29 estimates, using a Price to Embedded Value (P/EV) multiple of 1.7x. The embedded value represents the current value of future profits from existing policies, a standard way to value life insurance companies. Going forward, the primary items for investors to track include the company's ability to maintain growth in the HDFC Bank channel, the sustainability of VNB margins, and any official announcements from the insurance regulator regarding commission structures.
