HDFC Bank: UBS Initiates Coverage With Buy Rating, Sets Target At ₹1,000

Global brokerage UBS has started coverage on HDFC Bank with a buy rating and a price target of ₹1,000, projecting a recovery in loan growth and margins. While the long-term outlook appears positive, the stock has faced a 25% decline this year and significant selling pressure, making the upcoming October 17, 2026, earnings report a crucial monitorable for shareholders.

Global brokerage UBS has initiated coverage on HDFC Bank, assigning a buy rating and a price target of ₹1,000 per share. The move highlights confidence in the bank’s operational recovery following the resolution of key management succession issues and its ongoing branch expansion efforts. The firm has added the lender to its 'APAC Key Call' list, reflecting its view that the bank is well-positioned for long-term improvement.

Financial projections from UBS suggest that the bank’s loan growth could reach 15% annually during the period of fiscal year 2027 to 2029. The brokerage also expects profit margins to improve, with net interest margins projected to climb toward 3.5%. Additionally, the firm anticipates a return on assets of 1.9% by fiscal year 2028, suggesting that the bank's profitability metrics are on a recovery path.

From a valuation standpoint, UBS views the current market price as reasonable, noting that the stock trades at 1.4 times its projected book value for fiscal year 2028. This price-to-book ratio is a metric often used by investors to determine if a bank's stock is cheap or expensive relative to the value of its net assets.

Despite the positive outlook from the brokerage, investor sentiment remains cautious. The bank’s stock has struggled throughout the year, with a year-to-date decline exceeding 25%. Current market data shows that the stock is facing persistent selling pressure, with approximately 69% of orders on the sell side. This indicates that despite the long-term optimism from institutional analysts, many traders have been reducing their positions.

The next significant event for investors will be the release of the bank's second-quarter earnings, scheduled for October 17, 2026. Shareholders will likely look for concrete data to confirm the operational improvements and growth trends that the brokerage has predicted. The company's ability to maintain its margin targets and execute its expansion strategy without incurring excessive costs will be a key factor for the market to watch.
