HDFC Bank reported a profit after tax of Rs 195 billion with loan growth at 16.4%. Following these results, Emkay Global has set a target price of Rs 1,050 for the stock. Investors are monitoring the bank's leadership transition and its efforts to manage deposit growth amid industry-wide margin pressures.
HDFC Bank posted a profit after tax of Rs 195 billion in its latest quarterly update, with a return on assets of 1.8 percent. The bank’s operating profit before provisions saw a year-on-year growth of 5.6 percent, while core operating profit growth reached 12.4 percent. These numbers reflect the bank's efforts to balance growth with operational stability in a competitive banking environment.
Loan growth for the bank hit 16.4 percent compared to the same period last year, helped by a strong performance across various retail credit segments. If one excludes specific foreign currency loan components, the growth rate remained solid at 14.4 percent. On the funding side, deposit growth was also strong at 18.8 percent, which was helped by inflows from FCNR(B) deposits.
However, profit margins have seen some pressure. The net interest margin, which measures the difference between interest earned and interest paid, contracted by 8 basis points quarter-on-quarter to 3.3 percent. This decline is largely due to the higher cost of funds, as banks have been paying more to attract deposits to support their loan books. This is a common challenge for many lenders in the current economic environment, where liquidity requirements are strictly monitored by regulators.
Analysts at Emkay Global have set a target price of Rs 1,050 for the HDFC Bank stock. This valuation reflects a price of 2.0 times the estimated adjusted book value for September 2028, and it includes a contribution from the bank's subsidiaries. The brokerage noted that the appointment of a new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer is a vital step for the bank. Investors are looking for clarity regarding the leadership transition, as this is expected to help stabilize business strategy and improve client and investor confidence.
Given that the bank's stock has performed below many of its peers over the recent period, some market observers believe the current valuation may draw attention. A shift in foreign portfolio investment flows and a reduction in external geopolitical concerns could also influence the stock's future performance.
Going forward, investors may want to track how the bank manages its net interest margins and whether it can maintain healthy deposit growth without further raising funding costs. Additionally, the progress on the leadership transition and the bank’s ability to execute its retail-focused strategy will be important indicators of its operational efficiency.
