HDFC Bank Appoints Anup Bagchi as CEO; Motilal Oswal Sets ₹925 Target

HDFC Bank has named Anup Bagchi as its new MD & CEO, effective October 27, 2026. Following the announcement, Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹925. Analysts believe this leadership transition addresses succession concerns, though the bank must still navigate integration challenges following its merger with the housing finance entity.

HDFC Bank is set to undergo a significant leadership transition with the appointment of Anup Bagchi as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment for a three-year term starting October 27, 2026. Mr. Bagchi will succeed the current leader, Sashidhar Jagdishan, marking a pivotal moment for the lender as it looks to regain stability and growth momentum.

Following the announcement, Motilal Oswal Financial Services has maintained its positive outlook on the stock, issuing a target price of ₹925. Brokerage analysts view the appointment as a crucial step in resolving the leadership succession overhang that has concerned market participants. The firm anticipates that the change in leadership will help the bank address the performance challenges that have persisted since its merger with the parent housing finance corporation.

Financial Outlook and Growth Targets

The brokerage has projected an earnings recovery for the bank, with expectations of a turnaround beginning in fiscal year 2028. Analysts forecast that profit after tax growth could accelerate to 13% year-on-year by FY28, a notable improvement from the 9% average growth anticipated for the period between FY24 and FY27. This optimism is supported by the bank's recent quarterly performance, where it reported a 16.3% rise in advances and 16.8% growth in deposits during the September 2026 quarter.

However, the path to these growth targets involves navigating several operational hurdles. The bank has been under scrutiny for its post-merger performance, specifically regarding the efficiency of its loan mix and the pressure on net interest margins. Investors have been concerned about the bank’s ability to maintain high credit-deposit ratios while simultaneously managing the integration of a large housing finance business.

Key Monitorables for Investors

The primary task for the incoming leadership will be to improve deposit mobilization and optimize the credit-deposit ratio, which are essential for supporting sustainable loan growth. While the brokerage expects a valuation re-rating driven by stable leadership, the actual outcome will depend heavily on the bank’s execution capabilities under Mr. Bagchi. Investors will be tracking how the new management team balances the need for aggressive growth with the necessity of protecting profit margins and maintaining asset quality in a fluctuating macroeconomic environment. The bank’s ability to successfully integrate its digital data analytics to drive productivity will remain a critical factor in determining whether it can reverse the wealth erosion observed in the post-merger period.
