Geojit Sets Rs 5,581 Target for Torrent Pharmaceuticals

Brokerage firm Geojit Financial has initiated a 'Buy' rating on Torrent Pharmaceuticals with a target price of Rs 5,581. The call follows a 50.8% rise in quarterly revenue, driven by strong core business growth and synergies from the JB Pharma acquisition. Investors are weighing this expansion against higher finance costs and recent tax-related penalty orders.

Geojit Financial Services has initiated coverage on Torrent Pharmaceuticals, setting a price target of Rs 5,581. The brokerage’s outlook is driven by the company’s strong performance in the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, where it reported a 50.8% year-over-year revenue increase, reaching Rs 4,979 crore.

The company’s core business remains a key strength, with its branded formulations and an expanding chronic disease portfolio helping to grow its domestic market presence. A major part of the current performance stems from the successful integration of JB Pharma. This consolidation has helped improve operational efficiency, contributing to a 53.8% jump in EBITDA, which reached Rs 1,666 crore for the quarter. The company also saw its profit margins improve to 33.5%, reflecting the benefits of the merger and cost-saving efforts.

International operations also provided support, with revenue from global segments rising 48% compared to the previous year. Markets like Brazil and the US continue to be areas of focus, with new product launches helping the company maintain revenue diversification. This international reach is often viewed by investors as a safety net against domestic demand fluctuations.

While the operational growth is strong, the financial results also highlighted some pressures. The company’s profit after tax fell by 9.9% to Rs 544 crore during the quarter. This decline was primarily attributed to higher interest expenses, which were a direct result of the debt taken to finance the JB Pharma acquisition. Investors often track how quickly a company can repay such acquisition-related debt, as it directly impacts net profitability.

In addition to financial costs, the company has faced regulatory hurdles. Recently, Torrent Pharmaceuticals received a tax penalty order of Rs 3.12 crore from Tamil Nadu authorities. This relates to legacy GST matters involving JB Chemicals between fiscal years 2021 and 2024. The company has indicated that it intends to appeal this order. Regulatory and tax-related challenges are common in the pharmaceutical sector, but they remain an important factor for investors to consider regarding cash flow and legal expenses.

Moving forward, the primary areas for investors to monitor will be the pace of debt reduction following the JB Pharma acquisition and the company’s ability to sustain margin improvements. Additionally, updates regarding the pending GST appeal and the success of new product launches in international markets will be key indicators of the company’s long-term health and growth potential.
