Geojit Financial Services has initiated a buy rating on Vedanta Aluminium Metal with a price target of Rs 498. The brokerage cites strong Q1 FY2027 performance, including a 205% profit surge and robust production growth. Investors should monitor the company's operational cost management and progress on debt reduction amid global commodity price volatility.
Geojit Financial Services has initiated a 'buy' rating on Vedanta Aluminium Metal, setting a price target of Rs 498 per share. This positive stance follows the company's strong performance in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, driven by significant production growth and improved operational efficiency.
Financial performance in the recent quarter showed strong momentum. Vedanta Aluminium Metal reported a 205% year-on-year increase in profit after tax, reaching Rs 6,597 crore. Revenue for the same period climbed 46% compared to the previous year. The company's EBITDA, a measure of core operating profit, rose by 134.8% to Rs 10,299 crore. Profit margins also saw a notable improvement, expanding by 1,820 basis points to 48.1%.
Operational expansion has been a key driver for these results. The company increased its aluminium output to 632kt for the quarter, with the Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) site contributing 168kt, a 16.7% increase year-on-year. Alumina production also grew by 41% to reach 826kt, as the 3 MTPA circuit reached higher utilization levels. In addition to these operational results, the board has approved a maiden interim dividend of Rs 8 per share for FY2027, which may be of interest to income-focused investors.
Despite the strong growth, investors should consider several operational and market-related factors. While the company is managing its costs effectively, production costs did rise by 3% quarter-on-quarter to $373 per tonne. This increase was largely driven by volatility in fuel oil prices, which remains linked to geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Any prolonged weakness in global aluminium prices or further spikes in input costs could put pressure on profit margins in the coming quarters.
Strategic focus remains on enhancing the product mix with more value-added products and aggressive debt reduction. The company's ability to maintain its current pace of deleveraging—the process of paying down debt—will be a key area for investors to watch. As the company continues its expansion projects, the risk of project delays or cost overruns remains a standard consideration for the manufacturing sector. Looking ahead, investors may want to track updates on smelter ramp-ups, management’s debt-reduction progress, and any shifts in global energy costs that impact production expenses.
