GMR Airports Q2 Results: EBITDA Beats Estimates Despite Flat Traffic

GMR Airports reported an operating profit of Rs 14.8 billion, surpassing analyst expectations even as passenger traffic growth remained flat at 1%. The company is benefiting from rising non-aeronautical income and new commissions in Nagpur and Vizag. Investors are tracking how these new facilities and traffic assumptions impact future growth targets.

GMR Airports Infrastructure reported a resilient performance in its latest quarterly results, with the company’s operating profit (EBITDA) reaching Rs 14.8 billion. This figure represents a 2% rise compared to the same period last year and managed to beat estimates from major brokerages by roughly 6%. Revenue growth followed a similar trend, climbing 12% year-on-year, largely driven by the operational start of new facilities in Nagpur and Vizag.

While the headline numbers were positive, the underlying operational metrics show a mixed picture for investors. Passenger traffic growth remained nearly flat at 1% year-on-year, and on a like-for-like basis—which compares performance without accounting for new projects—traffic actually dipped by 3%. For airport operators, passenger numbers are a critical driver of growth, so this data point is a key area for shareholders to monitor.

To compensate for the slow traffic volume, the company has focused on increasing the money it earns per passenger. Non-aeronautical income, which includes revenue from airport shops, duty-free stores, and advertisements, rose 12% sequentially to reach Rs 772 per passenger. Similarly, aeronautical yield—the revenue earned from core airport services like landing and parking—reached Rs 497 per passenger, showing a 12% increase compared to the previous quarter.

Despite the solid earnings performance, analysts have made slight adjustments to their outlook. Estimates for operating profit for fiscal years 2027 through 2029 have been trimmed by 1-3%. This downward revision is largely due to more conservative assumptions regarding passenger traffic at major hubs like Hyderabad (GHIAL) and Manohar (MOPA) airports. Emkay Global has maintained its buy rating and a target price of Rs 120, citing the company's long-term growth potential.

The airport business is highly capital-intensive, meaning companies must spend significant amounts on building and maintaining infrastructure. As GMR Airports expands its footprint, the success of these new projects and the ability to maintain profitability despite varying traffic levels remain essential. Investors may want to track the company's debt management, capacity utilization, and seasonal travel demand in the coming quarters to gauge how well the business can navigate these capital requirements.
