Prabhudas Lilladher increased its target price for GAIL India to Rs 206 following a strong earnings report for the second quarter. The company reported higher gas transmission volumes and a turnaround in petrochemical margins. Additionally, the board approved an initial public offering (IPO) for its subsidiary, GAIL Gas Limited.
Prabhudas Lilladher has revised its target price for GAIL (India) to Rs 206 per share, up from the previous estimate of Rs 204. This update follows a robust financial performance in the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, where the company’s earnings significantly outperformed market expectations.
Earnings and Operational Growth
GAIL India reported a standalone net profit of Rs 4,650 crore for the quarter. The strong result was supported by steady performance in the natural gas transmission business. Transmission volumes reached 130.1 million metric standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD), marking a 6.3% increase over the previous quarter. This growth highlights the rising demand for natural gas across power, fertilizer, and petrochemical industries. Additionally, the company’s petrochemical segment, which has faced pressure in the past, successfully reached a break-even point during the quarter.
Strategic Move: IPO for GAIL Gas
Alongside the financial results, the company’s board has approved an in-principle plan for an initial public offering (IPO) of its wholly-owned subsidiary, GAIL Gas Limited. The company aims to dilute up to 25% of its stake in the subsidiary. This move is significant for investors as it represents a potential unlocking of value from the gas distribution arm, which has been an expanding part of the company's business model.
Management Outlook and Risk Factors
While the company has raised its guidance for marketing and trading profit before tax to a range of Rs 90 billion to Rs 95 billion for the current fiscal year, management has issued a note of caution. Leadership explained that the exceptionally high trading gains observed in the first half of the year are unlikely to repeat in the second half. Investors should be aware that the company expects marketing profits to normalize to a range of Rs 40 billion to Rs 45 billion in the next fiscal year.
Furthermore, the petrochemical segment is expected to continue operating near a break-even point for the remainder of the fiscal year, suggesting that profit margins in this division may remain limited. The company also faces external risks, such as global geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which can lead to volatility in LNG supply and pricing. These factors remain a monitorable risk for the company's trading margins.
The key focus areas for investors in the coming quarters will be the execution timeline of the GAIL Gas Limited IPO, the company’s ability to maintain high gas transmission volumes, and whether overall profit margins can hold steady as trading gains normalize in the second half of the year.
