Fortis Healthcare: Analyst Views Split Following Q1 Growth

Fortis Healthcare reported a 17.5% year-on-year revenue increase to INR 2,545 crore for the first quarter of fiscal 2027. While the company aims for 25% hospital EBITDA margins by FY28, analyst price targets remain mixed, ranging from INR 1,030 to INR 1,180. Investors are balancing strong expansion plans against potential margin pressures from rising costs and integration challenges of new hospital units.

Fortis Healthcare has posted a steady performance in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, with consolidated revenue growing by 17.5% year-on-year to INR 2,545 crore. The company reported a net profit of INR 272.8 crore for the quarter. As the hospital operator continues its growth strategy, the market is currently evaluating its ability to maintain profit margins amid expansion efforts.

Strategic Growth and Margin Targets

The company is focused on a long-term goal of achieving 25% EBITDA margins in its hospital business by fiscal year 2028. To support this, Fortis is aggressively expanding its capacity, with plans to add 400 beds in FY27. Additionally, the company is investing in a new INR 252 crore Proton therapy facility in Gurugram, aimed at strengthening its medical infrastructure. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to move into higher-value medical services, which generally offer better profitability.

Diverging Analyst Outlooks

Recent reports from financial institutions show a difference in opinion regarding the stock's future value. While some brokerages, such as Prabhudas Lilladher, have previously set a target price of INR 1,120, citing strong growth potential from acquisitions like People Tree and Shrimann Hospital, other analysts have taken a more cautious stance. For instance, Nomura has retained a neutral rating with a lower price target of INR 1,030. Meanwhile, global firms like JP Morgan and Citi have maintained more positive outlooks with targets reaching up to INR 1,180. These varying estimates suggest that investors are weighing the company's growth against its current valuation.

Risks and Monitorables

Investors should be aware of several factors that could influence future performance. The company experienced a 7.1% miss against consensus earnings estimates in the recent quarter, which has drawn some attention. Profit margins may come under pressure due to rising costs, specifically those related to employee stock option plans (ESOPs) and other structural expenses. Furthermore, the company faces execution risks as it integrates newly acquired hospital units and ramps up operations at its existing facilities in Manesar and Greater Noida. While the net debt-to-EBITDA ratio remains at a manageable 1.01x, with net debt of INR 2,233 crore as of June 30, 2026, the company’s ability to execute its expansion plans without overextending its finances will be critical. Moving forward, the key factor for investors to monitor will be whether the company can successfully scale these new assets to improve overall margins without significantly increasing debt or operational costs.
