Federal Bank: ICICI Securities Keeps 'Hold', Lowers Target to 330

ICICI Securities maintains its 'Hold' rating on Federal Bank, revising the price target to INR 330. Despite a solid 18% sequential profit rise, analysts feel the stock's current price already captures its growth potential. Investors should focus on managing rising operational costs and upcoming corporate developments as key factors ahead.

Federal Bank recently reported a strong second-quarter performance for the fiscal year 2027, but the update led brokerage firm ICICI Securities to adjust its outlook on the stock. While the bank posted a profit after tax of INR 13.8 billion—a healthy 18% increase compared to the previous quarter—the brokerage maintained a 'Hold' rating and lowered its price target for the stock from INR 350 to INR 330.

Earnings and Cost Pressures

The bank’s financial report showed stability in key areas, with net interest margins holding steady at 3.3%. Core fee income, which comes from services other than interest, grew by over 20%, indicating strong business activity. However, the bank also reported a 15% increase in operational expenses. This rise in costs to run the business, such as technology upgrades and branch expansion, acted as a drag on overall profitability. For investors, this highlights the challenge of balancing growth with cost management in a competitive banking environment.

Valuation and Market Stance

The reduction in the price target reflects a shift in how analysts view the stock's value. ICICI Securities updated its valuation multiple to 1.6 times the estimated fiscal year 2028 adjusted book value, down from the previous 1.7 times. This suggests that the brokerage believes the market has already factored in the bank's growth expectations, leaving limited room for immediate price appreciation at current levels.

Strategic Factors for Investors

Beyond the quarterly numbers, the banking sector in India is currently navigating intense competition for deposits, which often forces banks to spend more on building their customer base and digital infrastructure. This pressure is likely contributing to the rise in operational expenses seen this quarter. Additionally, the bank's future, particularly regarding potential mergers and acquisitions, remains a key point of focus. Management has been providing clarity on these strategic activities, but any development on this front could alter the bank's risk profile. Investors may want to track how the bank manages its operational costs in the coming quarters and whether its core income growth can outpace these rising expenses to improve overall returns.
