Emkay Global Starts Vishal Mega Mart Coverage With Rs 170 Target

Brokerage firm Emkay Global has initiated coverage on retailer Vishal Mega Mart, setting a target price of Rs 170. The positive outlook is based on the company's aggressive plans to open over 100 stores annually and a new small-town store model. Investors should note that the success of this strategy depends on managing intense competition in the value-retail sector and maintaining tight inventory control.

Emkay Global has initiated coverage on Vishal Mega Mart with a target price of Rs 170. The brokerage’s outlook centers on the retailer's aggressive dual-format expansion strategy. The company aims to add over 100 large-format stores every year, with an estimated potential market of 1,200 locations.

Alongside this, Vishal Mega Mart is testing a smaller store format designed for towns with populations as low as 40,000. These smaller outlets are expected to generate return metrics similar to the larger stores, theoretically providing the company with space to open 4,000 additional units in the future. To support this growth, the company is also investing in technology, such as RFID tagging, to improve inventory tracking and reduce product loss, a critical factor for maintaining profitability in the low-margin value retail business.

Financial projections from the brokerage suggest a compound annual growth rate of approximately 18% in revenue and 27% in profit after tax between fiscal years 2026 and 2029. The stock is currently priced at 47 times estimated earnings for fiscal 2027 and 36 times for fiscal 2028. This premium valuation suggests that the market has high expectations for the company’s long-term operational performance.

While the growth plans are ambitious, investors should keep in mind the competitive nature of the Indian value-fashion sector. Large players like Trent, which operates Zudio, and regional competitors like V-Mart, are also expanding their networks rapidly. This competition can put pressure on pricing and limit the ability of any single player to dominate market share.

Another point for investors to watch is the 'Belong & Co.' initiative, a premium apparel format currently in a pilot phase in Delhi. This venture signals a shift toward capturing higher-spending younger shoppers, which is a different segment from the core value-retail business. Success for Vishal Mega Mart will depend on its ability to execute its expansion plans without straining its balance sheet, while simultaneously ensuring that its private-label products continue to attract customers in an increasingly crowded retail market.
