Emkay Global Maintains Buy On WPIL Despite Q2 Earnings Miss

WPIL reported a 17% drop in quarterly revenue as order delays and slow project execution hit performance. Emkay Global kept its positive rating, citing a strong ₹51 billion order backlog and better cash flow management. Investors are watching for improved project delivery in the coming quarters.

Q2 Performance and Margin Pressure

WPIL, the pump manufacturer, faced a challenging second quarter for fiscal year 2027. The company's consolidated revenue fell 17% year-on-year to ₹3.54 billion, missing expectations. Brokerage firm Emkay Global, which maintains a 'Buy' rating on the stock, noted that the earnings miss was driven by unexpected delays in domestic orders and slow execution in project businesses.

Operating margins—the profit left after core business expenses—also came under pressure, shrinking significantly compared to the same period last year. Management attributed the shortfall to 'lumpy' or inconsistent revenue booking from international markets and slower progress on government-linked projects, such as the Jal Jeevan Mission. These factors combined to create a softer financial performance for the quarter.

Backlog and Cash Flow Strength

Despite the short-term operational drag, the investment case for the company currently hinges on its future potential. WPIL holds a significant order backlog of approximately ₹51 billion, split nearly equally between domestic and international projects. This pipeline provides the company with clear visibility for future revenue, assuming project execution hurdles are resolved.

Additionally, the company showed progress in managing its finances during the first half of the year. Net working capital days—a measure of how efficiently the company manages cash, inventory, and payments—improved by dropping 21 days. The firm also reported positive operating cash flow for the first half of fiscal year 2027, a notable improvement from the negative cash flow recorded in the prior year.

Risks and Outlook

It is important for investors to note that the pump manufacturing and projects business can be volatile. The company’s heavy reliance on large, government-linked infrastructure contracts means that any delays in approvals, site readiness, or execution can quickly affect quarterly figures. Margin pressure also remains a key area to monitor, as operational inefficiencies can erode profitability if costs rise.

Reflecting the softer-than-anticipated performance, Emkay Global has adjusted its earnings estimates downward by an average of 17% to 26% for the FY26-29 period and lowered its target price for the stock to ₹550. Investors should now focus on the speed of project execution and whether the company can successfully convert its large order book into actual revenue in the second half of the year.
